Job summary

McGraw Hill in New York is seeking a Senior Front-end Software Engineer to build and improve one of our flagship learning products, supporting AI-driven web experiences and instructor courseware.

You will mentor engineers, shape front-end architecture, collaborate across product, design, backend, and platform teams, and champion accessibility, performance, and security.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional front-end experience building production front-end applications.
• Advanced proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and Next.js.
• Experience with component-based UIs and design systems.
• Experience integrating front-end apps with GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Familiarity with GraphQL code generation and schema-driven development.
• Experience building AI-driven user experiences or using AI-assisted workflows.

Your role:

As a senior front-end software engineer on Sharpen, you will build and improve one of McGraw Hill's most innovative learning products, supporting AI-driven web experiences, instructor courseware, and related digital platforms. You will work with engineering, product, design, and platform teams to deliver scalable, reliable, secure, accessible, and engaging user experiences. You will lead complex technical initiatives, shape front-end architecture, mentor engineers, and deliver solutions across teams. Promote front-end best practices in code quality, accessibility, performance, and collaboration.

What You'll Do:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain user-facing web applications using TypeScript, React, and Next.js.
• Build reusable, accessible, responsive, and performant UI components.
• Integrate front-end applications with GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Work with GraphQL schemas, generated types, queries, mutations, subscriptions, and client-side data management. Translate product and design requirements into scalable, maintainable front-end solutions.
• Lead complex front-end initiatives and contribute to shared component libraries and architecture.
• Collaborate with product, design, backend, mobile, platform, and data teams.
• Influence technical decisions and communicate trade-offs across teams.
• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical planning.

What we Value / What You'll Need:

• Passion for using technology to improve educational outcomes.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience, including designing, building, and supporting production front-end applications.
• Advanced proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and Next.js.
• Strong experience developing component-based UIs and design systems.
• Experience integrating front-end applications with GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Familiarity with Apollo Client, GraphQL code generation, and schema-driven development.
• Experience building AI-driven user experiences or using AI-assisted development workflows.
• Proven ability to lead complex front-etond initiatives and influence application architecture.
• Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to front-end standards and best practices.
• Experience with automated testing, Git workflows, and continuous integration.
• Familiarity with Playwright for front-end and unit testing.
• Strong understanding of web accessibility, responsive design, performance optimization, security, and observability. Experience with cloud/AWS services like CloudFront, S3, ECR, EKS, serverless compute, etc.
• Experience building accessible applications in accordance with WCAG standards.
• Experience in a SOX- and/or SOC 2-compliant environment is preferred.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

• Experience in EdTech or digital learning platforms.
• AWS Certification
• Experience building AI-driven user experiences or using AI-assisted development workflows.
• Experience working in a TypeScript monorepo.
• Experience with headless CMS platforms or media-rich applications.

The pay range for this position is between $110,000 - $160,000 annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
