Job summary

H.E.B. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer-Backend to deliver complex code solutions and support deployment pipelines. You will influence system design, security, scalability, reliability, and performance while providing end-to-end support.

You will mentor peers, drive production readiness, and collaborate across teams to resolve issues and improve services in a hybrid Austin/San Antonio environment. The role demands strong C/C++ on Linux, architecture reviews, and leadership in on-call

Qualifications

• Requires a Computer Science degree or equivalent education/experience.
• 5+ years of software development experience in C/C++ on Linux.
• Proficient in Linux inter-process communication mechanisms and GCC/GDB tools.
• Able to design and review complex system features with sustainability in mind.
• Experience mentoring or leading developers and reviewing code.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and system architecture, plus production issue resolution.

Job Summary

As a Senior Software Engineer-Backend, you'll deliver complex code solutions. You'll support the build and deployment pipeline and when necessary, diagnose / solve production support or on-call issues. You'll contribute to overall system design, architecture, security, scalability, reliability, application performance and provide end-to-end support.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

• Works on web projects / tasks with limited or no guidance
• Writes production-ready code and tests that meet acceptance criteria, are easily testable, documented, easily understood by other developers, and account for edge cases, security, and errors. Creating, configuring, and supporting build and deployment pipelines.
• Leads others in coding / configuration / maintaining / testing / debugging existing or new systems; delivers quality features and bug fixes that align with our development process
• Capable of leading team on effective production support or on-call, debugging, and troubleshooting highly complex issues within team services. Able to identify a path to resolution for most issues for team services.
• Demonstrates ownership of team services and influences the team. Starts to learn how to influence across teams. Fosters growth environment through mentorship and open collaboration with peers.
• Recommends and drives changes to processes and tools at the team level aligned with the organization and company goals.
• Reviews epics critically and ensures dependencies are identified, they’re appropriately broken down and prioritized, and well understood by the team and stakeholders.
• Drives priority setting and urgency in alignment with organizational strategy.
• Anticipates and communicates blockers, delays, and cost ballooning for their work before they require escalation. Ensures expectations within their team are clarified between all parties involved.

Qualifications & Key Requirements

Work Experience

• A Computer Science degree or comparable formal training, certification, or work experience
• 5+ years of experience in software development primarily in C/C++ on Linux
• Proficient in Linux Inter process communication mechanisms
• Proficient in GNU compilers, debuggers and related tools (e.g.; GCC, GDB)
• Able to develop and review system design for complex features with an eye towards sustainability and iterative development potential
• Experience assigning tasks to developers, and reviewing code as a senior/lead contributor
• Comprehensive knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and system architecture
• Proficient at analyzing and resolving complex issues originating in production
• Experience with common software engineering tools (e.g., Git, Jira, Confluence)
• Desirable to have experience or understanding of cloud native microservices, Postgres and containers.
• Desirable to be proficient in REST/GRPC/Java/Golang.
