Job summary

Nelnet Business Services (NBS), a division of Nelnet, Inc., seeks a Senior Software Engineer on the New Ventures team to design, develop, and improve software applications with ownership and collaboration.

The role requires 5+ years of experience and a track record of shipping production software in Python and Java. You will mentor engineers, participate in Agile development, and drive continuous improvement while solving complex technical challenges in a fast-moving environment in Nebraska.

Responsibilities

  • Design robust solutions for complex projects and scalable software applications.

  • Perform code audits, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the lifecycle to ensure high quality applications.

  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers with reviews and guidance.
  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to deliver solutions.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emergent technologies.
  • Provide strategic input on future development options and technology choices.

The Senior Software Engineer on the New Ventures team designs, creates, maintains, audits, and improves software applications by performing coding, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the application development process. This position works on fast-moving, innovative projects that require independent ownership and solutions for complex technical challenges. The Senior Software Engineer completes work with minimal supervision, mentors less experienced engineers, and advocates for continuous improvements while driving team success through collaboration and technical excellence.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design & Development: Design robust solutions for complex projects and build scalable software applications that power new business initiatives
  • Code Excellence: Write, test, and implement efficient, maintainable code that meets quality standards and performance requirements
  • Agile & Adaptive Development: Work within an Agile environment, respond to change quickly, re-focus development efforts, and adapt to evolving requirements
  • Ownership & Independence: Manage projects from conception through deployment with minimal supervision, owning technical decisions and outcomes
  • Code Quality: Perform code audits, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the development lifecycle to ensure high-quality, maintainable applications
  • Continuous Improvement: Audit existing systems, identify optimization opportunities, and advocate for technical improvements across the team
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing code reviews, technical guidance, and professional development support
  • Collaborative Leadership: Advocate for continuous improvements, influence technical decisions, and work as a solution-oriented partner with team members and stakeholders
  • Professional Development: Continuously update technical knowledge and skills to stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies
  • Strategic Input: Make recommendations for future development options and technology choices to support business objectives

Pay Range for this role is - $100,000 - $120,000 based on experience

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
EXPERIENCE:
  • 5+ years of related experience.
  • Shipped production software in Python and Java

  • Strong technical competency.
  • Ability to communicate with clients, colleagues and management to explain complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills
