Job summary

Amazon Leo seeks an experienced engineering leader to manage the SDN team responsible for the network virtualization stack and signaling control plane. You will shape the long-term vision, hire and organize teams across cloud, satellites, gateways, and terminals, and ensure dependable software delivery.

This role requires a track record of delivering scalable systems with modern development practices and strong cross-functional collaboration, balancing space, mobile, and terrestrial environments.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience.
  • 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience.
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment.
  • Experience leading large-scale, technical or engineering programs with a proven record of thought leadership and delivering benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-layered organization of 50+ software engineers, managers, TPMs with end-to-end scope.
  • Build a high-performance engineering culture grounded in ownership, velocity, and operational excellence.
  • Provide career development for a group of exceptional software developers.
  • Manage the software lifecycle of deliverables from concept to operations, including cloud and telemetry data.
  • Own and drive execution of the multi-year vision and strategy for the team.
  • Develop new network observability features to improve quality and functionality.
  • Lead cross-organizational integration and troubleshooting across space, mobile, and terrestrial environments.
  • Define long-term architecture and ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability across product generations.
  • Define, manage, and monitor KPIs for your systems.
  • Define mechanisms to ensure predictable/high-quality software deliveries and continuous improvement.
  • Translate ambiguous product concepts into clear, executable engineering plans.
  • Partner with satellite, gateway, network planning and product teams to define system architecture and roadmap.

Job description

Amazon Leo is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband network connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world - from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies.

The Leo Software Defined Networking (SDN) team designs, implements and operates the network virtualization stack and SDN control plane signaling. Our scope spans over beam planning, routing, and forwarding through our SDN Controller, Agents, and Applications that provides a high throughput telecom service comprised of Low Earth Orbit satellites, customer terminals, gateways, cloud services and terrestrial network infrastructure that connects into public and private networks.

As the manager of this team, you will define the long-term vision for the team and its products as well as hiring and organizing to succeed. The candidate must have expertise with modern development practices and network observability management, and will have demonstrated the capability to deliver best-in-class software systems that solve some of today's hardest networking problems.

Organizational Leadership
  • Lead a multi-layered organization of 50+ software engineers, managers, TPMs with end-to-end scope

End-to-End Technical Ownership
  • Manage the software lifecycle of deliverables from concept to operations, encompassing our networking software deployed in the Cloud and telemetry data published from satellites, gateways, and customer terminals.
  • Own and drive execution of the multi-year vision and strategy for the team
  • Develop new network observability features that offer improved quality and functionality.
  • Lead cross-organizational integration and troubleshooting initiatives across challenging mobile, space and terrestrial environments.
  • Define long-term architecture and ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability across product generations
Operational Excellence
  • Define, manage, and monitor KPIs for your systems
  • Define mechanisms and processes to ensure predictable/high-quality software deliveries, and continuous improvement
  • Translate ambiguous product concepts into clear, executable engineering plans
Cross-Functional System Design
  • Partner with satellite, gateway, network planning and commerce and product teams to define system architecture, requirements, and roadmap.
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience partnering with product and program management teams
  • Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications
  • Experience leading large-scale, technical or engineering programs with a proven record of thought leadership, business case development, realizing customer benefits, and successful program completion
  • Experience in written and verbal communication with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to executives and non-technical leaders
  • 4+ years of distributed systems experience, or Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • Experience in management: developing engineers into managers and building teams
  • Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems, or experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
