Job summary
RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Senior Server Engineer to support, maintain, and improve enterprise server, virtualization, storage, and hybrid cloud infrastructure across datacenters and data rooms. You will work in a 24x7 environment with strong scripting and security focus.
The role requires advanced knowledge of Windows Server, VMware, Citrix, and cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), plus on-call rotation and collaboration with customers and vendors. A BA/BS in a related field is preferred.
Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of Windows Server, Linux/Unix, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and related enterprise infrastructure services.
- Strong experience supporting virtualized and hybrid infrastructure platforms, including VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, Citrix, converged, and hyper-converged compute environments.
- Working knowledge of cloud technology platforms, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, hybrid cloud architecture, identity and access management, monitoring, security controls, and cost-aware operational support.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex server, cloud, virtualization, storage, application, and network-related issues using logs, monitoring tools, performance data, and root cause analysis methods.
- Proficiency with scripting and automation tools, such as PowerShell or related technologies, to improve operational efficiency, reporting, provisioning, patching, and repeatable infrastructure tasks.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring problem ticket queues and resolve tickets in a timely manner according to the defined SLAs.
- Participating in monthly security patching for computing environment.
- Troubleshooting with peers and customers on application related issues; function as escalation point for application admins and second level support.
- Updating Operating Systems (Windows), and Assist with updating VMware Infrastructure (upgrades, hotfixes, security remediations).
- Assisting Vendors, Customers and Peers with remote access needs.
- Following and executing defined runbooks and documentation for Disaster recovery events, System Decommissions, Infrastructure installs/Upgrades, Application patching.
- Monitoring infrastructure via monitoring toolsets.
- Create technical documentation and workflows.
- Following defined Change Management policies and procedures.
- Attending daily, weekly and monthly team meetings; attending project or troubleshooting calls.
- Participating in projects as assigned.
- Supporting cloud technology platforms, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, and hybrid cloud services, by assisting with provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, access coordination, and operational support activities.

The Senior Server Engineer is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving enterprise server, virtualization, storage, and hybrid cloud infrastructure across assigned datacenters, data rooms, and related computing environments. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of Windows Server and desktop operating systems, VMware, Citrix, converged and hyper-converged compute platforms, enterprise storage, data protection, and cloud technology platforms including Microsoft Azure, AWS, and related hybrid cloud services. The engineer will support secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure operations through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, automation, documentation, patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management. This position also requires strong scripting and automation skills, sound understanding of information security best practices, and the ability to participate in scheduled and unscheduled after-hours maintenance, emergency response, and mandatory on-call rotation in a 24x7 computing environment. The Senior Server Engineer is expected to collaborate effectively with customers, vendors, application teams, peers, and leadership; mentor other engineers; provide recommendations for operational improvements and innovation; and deliver excellent customer service with professionalism, compassion, empathy, and a consistent supportive attitude.
As a Sr. Server Engineer, a typical day
- Monitoring problem ticket queues and resolve tickets in a timely manner according to the defined SLAs

- Strong understanding of infrastructure security best practices, vulnerability remediation, privileged access, patch management, change control, and regulatory or organizational compliance requirements.
- Ability to create, maintain, and follow technical documentation, diagrams, workflows, standards, operational runbooks, and knowledge articles.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, support on-call responsibilities, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced 24x7 enterprise computing environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with peers, vendors, application teams, customers, and leadership.
- Ability to mentor engineers and peers, share technical knowledge, support continuous improvement, and contribute to team development.
- Commitment to excellent customer service, professionalism, compassion, empathy, and a consistent supportive attitude when working with customers and stakeholders.
- Certification or equivalent may be substituted for a BA degree.
- Bachelor or Master Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field. Or Equivalent work experience
- A minimum of eight (8) years of progressive Information Technology experience, including hands-on experience supporting enterprise server infrastructure, Windows Server operating systems, virtualization platforms such as VMware, datacenter hardware, storage technologies, monitoring tools, security patching, change management, technical documentation, automation/scripting, incident troubleshooting, and participation in 24x7 on-call support for mission-critical computing environments.
- Windows Server and Desktop and/or Linux/Unix Operating Systems , VMware vSphere and Horizon, Citrix, Active Directory, general networking concepts, powershell, Converged and Hyper-converged computing platforms. Cloud computing concepts and data protection platforms (Netbackup, Cohesity). Experience in Cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure and GCP)
