Job summary

Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking a Senior Safety and Quality Consultant to lead quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives across MICU and PIMCU. The role requires advanced knowledge of QI methodologies, data analysis, and effective stakeholder engagement, with on-site duties four days per week in Boston.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, public health, business, or related field.
• 4+ years of experience in Quality & Safety, Performance Improvement, or Project Management.
• If no bachelor's degree, a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

• Designs, leads, and evaluates quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives across MCC, MICU, and PIMCU.
• Defines project scope, charters, plans, milestones, risks, and sustainability strategies.

Position Summary

The Senior Safety and Quality Consultant is a key member of the Division of Medical Critical Care (MCC), responsible for leading and evaluating complex quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives across the 22-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and 24-bed Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMCU). The role leads multidisciplinary teams, oversees project planning and measurement strategies, and manages communication and stakeholder relationships. The position is primarily on-site, with an expectation of four days per week in the office to support frontline engagement, rapid-cycle testing, and sustained improvements.

Key Responsibilities

• Designs, leads, and evaluates complex quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives across Medical Critical Care, including the MICU and PIMCU, using established QI methodologies, including the Model for Improvement with PDSA cycles, Lean, Six Sigma, reliability science, and implementation science.
• Defines project scope, charters, work plans, milestones, deliverables, risks, and sustainability strategies; ensures alignment with divisional and institutional priorities.
• Independently leads multidisciplinary clinical and operational teams to identify problems, design interventions, test changes, implement improvements, and spread successful practices.
• Develops and oversees quality measurement plans, including structure, process, outcome, and balancing measures; establishes baselines, targets, and ongoing monitoring plans.
• Oversees quantitative and qualitative analyses, including chart reviews, safety-event trend reviews, process analyses, and failure mode analyses, to inform improvement work and decision-making.
• Coaches and provides methodological oversight to the MCC QI data analyst, including analytic planning, data definitions, extraction logic, validation, and interpretation of findings.
• Partners with clinical and operational leaders to design and refine workflows, standard work, care pathways, and reliability practices that reduce harm and improve patient and family experience.
• Creates clear, audience-appropriate reports, presentations, dashboards, run charts, control charts, and other visualizations for frontline teams, leaders, and institutional committees.
• Serves as an MCC liaison for quality and safety efforts, builds productive stakeholder relationships, represents the division on institutional committees, and supports communication across care settings.
• Educates, mentors, and coaches frontline staff and junior team members in quality improvement, patient safety, data interpretation, and practical improvement tools; supports dissemination through internal forums and external abstracts, posters, or manuscripts as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Advanced knowledge of quality improvement, patient safety, reliability science, implementation science, regulatory and accreditation standards, and healthcare quality measurement.
• Ability to independently lead multiple complex, cross-functional improvement initiatives from problem identification through implementation, sustainment, and spread.
• Strong analytical and data-visualization skills, including statistical process control, dashboard development, interpretation of observational data, and translation of findings into actionable recommendations.

• A bachelor’s degree accompanied by at least 4+ years of experience in Quality & Safety, Performance Improvement, or Project Management.

• A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in Quality & Safety, Performance Improvement, or Project Management if they do not possess a bachelor’s degree.
