Job summary

CarMax is seeking a Sr. Project Manager, Accounting Projects to lead transformation initiatives across Accounting and enterprise partners.

You will partner with senior leaders to define scope, manage plans, track risks, and deliver outcomes ensuring compliance and efficiency. You will develop integrated project plans, facilitate cross‑functional workshops, and drive change management with training and communications.

Qualifications

  • PMP, CSM, Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean or other certification preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related business degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive project, program, process improvement, or transformation experience in accounting/finance.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Project, Planner, Jira, Smartsheet, SharePoint or similar tools.
  • Experience supporting strategic finance/accounting initiatives such as ERP modernization and financial process standardization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning and execution of complex Accounting Transformation initiatives from intake to delivery.
  • Define objectives, scope, timelines, budget, resources, success measures and governance.
  • Develop and maintain integrated project plans, RAID logs, and executive reporting.
  • Facilitate meetings, remove obstacles, and ensure timely deliverables.
  • Lead continuous improvement and change management activities aligned to priorities.
  • Coordinate cross-functional workshops and future-state design discussions.
  • Support training, communications, readiness plans, and sustainment routines.
  • Provide consultative support on process improvement opportunities and control considerations.
  • Assist with documentation, inventory management, and audit readiness for related systems.

The Sr. Project Manager, Accounting Projects provides project leadership, analytical discipline, and transformation execution support for Accounting and key enterprise business partners. This role leads moderate to highly complex Accounting Transformation initiatives that improve processes, strengthen controls, enable technology adoption, and support scalable ways of working across a large, matrixed organization. With minimal direction, this position partners with senior leaders, stakeholders, and cross‑functional teams to define scope, build and manage project plans, track risks and dependencies, communicate progress, support change management, and deliver outcomes aligned to business objectives, compliance expectations, and operational efficiency goals.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • With minimal direction, lead the planning and execution of moderate to highly complex Accounting Transformation initiatives from intake through delivery and sustainment.
  • Partner with project sponsors, Accounting leaders, Technology, Audit, Operations, and other business partners to define objectives, scope, timelines, budget, resources, success measures, and governance routines.
  • Develop and maintain integrated project plans, stakeholder analyses, RAID logs, communication plans, decision trackers, and other project artifacts in alignment with enterprise project management standards.

  • Ensure deliverables are complete, current, appropriately documented, and transitioned effectively to business owners.
  • With minimal direction, lead and support continuous improvement and change management activities that advance Accounting Transformation priorities.
  • Facilitate medium to large cross-functional workshops, current-state assessments, process mapping sessions, future-state design discussions, and implementation planning.
  • Support adoption of new processes, tools, controls, and operating models by developing practical training materials, communication approaches, readiness plans, and sustainment routines.
  • Provide consultative support to business areas on process improvement opportunities, standardization, automation, control considerations, and measurable value delivery.
  • On an as-needed basis, partner with cross-functional business, technology, security, and compliance teams to support documentation, inventory management, control readiness, and audit-related activities for systems and processes within the Accounting Transformation portfolio.
  • Identify changes that may impact SOX, ITGC, or operational controls and maintain accurate documentation to support review, remediation, and ongoing governance.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
  • PMP, CSM, Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean, or other project/process improvement certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related business degree preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive project, program, process improvement, or transformation experience; experience in accounting, finance operations, shared services, or enterprise transformation preferred
  • Experience using Azure DevOps, Microsoft Project, Planner, Jira, Smartsheet, SharePoint, or similar tools to manage project plans, backlogs, dependencies, risks, and executive reporting preferred
  • Experience supporting or leading strategic finance and accounting initiatives such as ERP modernization, financial system implementations, automation, account reconciliation, procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, record-to-report, close optimization, control remediation, or financial process standardization preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision‑making, and executive communication skills; able to synthesize complex information into clear recommendations, risks, tradeoffs, and action plans
  • Passion for business transformation, operational excellence, and developing scalable accounting capabilities that support growth, compliance, and associate productivity
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Project, Planner, Visio, Teams, and SharePoint; familiarity with reporting, workflow, collaboration, or financial systems tools preferred
Work Location and Arrangement:

This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.

Work Authorization:

The Annual Salary For This Position Is

$85,800.00 - $128,700.00

May be eligible for bonus and equity.
Benefits

Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time.

Associates That Are Considered Full-time Hourly Or Commission/incentive Eligible
  • To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company.
  • For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay.

Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
