Job description

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Revenue Manager/Associate Director, this senior coder role oversees a large range of coding combinations (approximately 1,500–5,000), applies specialized coding knowledge to manage ICD‑10 and CPT procedural codes, and guides a centralized coding team as a subject matter expert to improve accuracy and efficiency of professional fee coding.

Responsibilities
  • Lead as a subject matter expert, presenting information to the team.
  • Audit and oversee team members’ accuracy and production.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local carrier guidelines.
  • Provide education and training to coding staff and physicians.
  • Perform high‑production coding to meet UCSF goals for accuracy and charge lag.
  • Conduct in‑depth reviews of physician documentation and prepare documentation audits.
  • Create coding analysis reports and online presentations with findings and recommendations.
  • Determine methods and procedures for new assignments and physician self‑coding analyses.
  • Provide detailed compliance feedback to internal and external coding teams.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and three years of relevant experience, or a HS Diploma / GED with seven years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or equivalent licensure evaluated by FPRMO management.
  • Secondary certification in the coding area related to a subject matter department at UCSF Health.
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle practices, billing, collections, charge capture, contractual adjustments, third‑party reimbursements, and cash management.
  • Strong understanding of reporting instruments, metrics, analytics, and tools used to measure and analyze the revenue cycle.
  • Detail‑oriented with proven ability to manage time, complete tasks and projects, and address complex urgent issues.
  • Strong skills in report development, dashboard design, and software tools specific to healthcare revenue cycle management, including database, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
  • Excellent communication skills to interpret and convey complex clinical finance information clearly, and to prepare compelling reports and presentations.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to evaluate workflows and propose innovative solutions.
  • Collaborative interpersonal skills for effective teamwork across business and clinical areas.
  • Technical resource skills to advise managers on regulatory changes, industry trends, and revenue cycle management developments.
  • In‑depth knowledge of billing and revenue cycle processes, coding (CPT and ICD‑9), documentation requirements, billing submission, and accounts receivable management.
  • Knowledge of federal and state Medicare and Medi‑Cal policies and their impact on billing and collections.
  • Availability to work Monday‑Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
