Job description

Responsibilities
  • Knowledge and practice of Hutchinson’s Health, Safety, and Environmental policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Responsible for the design of new automotive products from initial RFQ, through the development phases, production launch, and production support through to end‑of‑service requirements.
  • Experience implementing NVH improvements for automotive or commercial vehicle with anti‑vibration parts, e.g., engine mounts, suspension bushings, body/cradle/sub‑frame mounts, etc.
  • Detailed development of a product or system based on interpretation of customer specifications to meet functional and cost requirements.
  • Guide Designers and CAE Engineers to meet customer and internal deadlines/requirements, including DFM/DFA, to deliver a robust, cost‑effective solution to production.
  • Fully utilize physical test and analytical methods to support design direction.
  • Responsible for detailed design, establishing prints and specifications, developing prototypes, and specifying tests.
  • Coach and develop the engineering skills of Engineers and Technicians within the team.
  • Cooperatively work with the Project Team Leader to develop team objectives and goals and to jointly manage the team to achieve these goals.
  • Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) team, including review of timing issues, metal components, suppliers, molds, production processes, and product costs.
  • Support process, assembly, and component changes to improve manufacturing processes, quality, scrap, and OEE to reduce costs.
  • Work with engineering methods such as APQP, FMEA, DVP, GD&T, 8D problem solving, and DOE.
  • Specify laboratory tests to simulate the vehicle life cycle.
  • Diagnose and report causes of failures in products.
  • Continuously apply value analysis to reduce material and labor costs and improve product quality.
  • Act as the main line of technical communication with the customer, Hutchinson sales, suppliers, and other Hutchinson departments.
  • Complete tasks of all lower position levels and tasks assigned by management.
  • Encourage applied research and development with the engineering team and foster product and process innovation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must have good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with Sales, Engineering, Industrialization, Quality, and Production Departments, including all other plant and office personnel. Attention to detail and accuracy. Must have good computer skills and a working knowledge of manufacturing products/processes, including metal stampings, aluminum casting, aluminum extrusions, plastic injection, rubber molding, and metal finishing (coatings). Must understand the importance of being a self‑starter, working autonomously, organized, dedicated, and possessing good record‑keeping skills in a manufacturing environment.

Education & Experience

Minimum BS in Engineering or equivalent; and five to ten years of related experience.

Mathematical Skills

Advanced math skills, with calculus proficiency.

Computer Skills

Good computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks is a plus.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and process several abstract and concrete variables. Must be able to assess reasonableness of the analysis performed and manage product development programs with limited supervision. Must be a self‑starter, organized, dedicated, with good record‑keeping skills. Must accept and cope with restrictive time frames and unpredictable problems.

Physical Demands

Requires frequent sitting, walking, using hands to manipulate and feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and crouch. Must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds. Employee may be required to travel; some overnight and daily travel may be required.

Work Environment

Employee will work in a shared office (cubicle) environment. Occasional tasks may be performed in laboratory and manufacturing environments, requiring personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety shoes.
