Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration in Huntsville, AL, is seeking a Sr Principal Software Engineer to contribute to the C2BMC program. You will develop Java software for Regional Applications teams, collaborate across Battle Management and System-Arch groups, and support critical DoD missions on-site.

The role emphasizes leadership, software engineering best practices, and experience with Agile processes in a multi-team environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
  • Applicants must have a current, active in‑scope DoD‑issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one additional object‑oriented programming language (e.g., Java, C#, or C++)
  • The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication skills and be capable of working efficiently in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented setting
  • The candidate should have experience and knowledge of software practices, including coding standards, automated testing, build pipelines, and configuration management
  • Small team leadership experience (Agile team leadership strongly desired); mentoring and guiding junior engineers
  • Knowledge of server side/database development, computer system administration
  • Proven problem‑solving abilities, including analyzing performance and operational issues, pinpointing root causes, and proposing, designing, and implementing effective solutions
  • Other required technical skills include use of common software development and management tools such as Maven, Git/GitHub, Nexus, and Eclipse
  • Experience with Agile development practices
  • Understanding of standard systems engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for in-depth analysis and technical support for systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support
  • Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products
  • Works from specifications to develop or modify operating system applications
  • Assists with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs
  • Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the operating system’s overall efficiency
  • Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operational automation
  • Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require minor instruction and guidance in other phases
  • Leadership positions on small, software-focused teams may be required
  • Experience in software integration and formal testing
  • Strong understanding of software development best practices and the ability to apply them in a multi-team environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proven track record of root‑cause analysis and issue resolution
  • Proven ability to mentor and motivate junior engineers, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes continuous learning and drives the team toward shared success
