Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems in Melbourne, FL is seeking a Sr. Principal Responsible Engineer – Fuel Systems to lead the development of aircraft fuel subsystems.

The role is fully onsite with occasional travel (10%), and requires the ability to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance. You will oversee design, verification, integration, and testing across disciplines, and interact with suppliers and subcontracts.

Qualifications

  • Sr. Principal Responsible Engineer – Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline AND 8 years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree in STEM AND 6 years of relevant experience; OR PhD in STEM AND 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government Secret clearance, plus any required program access within a reasonable period of time.
  • Professional experience related to the development and integration of fuel subsystems or components in commercial or military aircraft applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform responsible engineer activities across fuel subsystem design and development, including trade studies, layouts, architecture definition, system test, verification, and troubleshooting.
  • Engage with suppliers on hardware development, qualification, and procurement as the technical point of contact.
  • Conduct system-level analysis and performance simulations to support fuel subsystem integration with other aircraft subsystems.
  • Plan and support system-level test execution, data processing, and troubleshooting; verify requirements and airworthiness.

Position Summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector seeks a Sr. Principal Responsible Engineer – Fuel Systems with experience in aircraft fuel subsystems development to join our team in Melbourne, FL. Fully onsite; no remote work available. Clearance required: Yes (Secret). Travel: Yes, 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform responsible engineer activities, including all aspects of fuel subsystem/component design and development such as trade studies, layouts, architecture definition, system test & verification, and troubleshooting. This also includes participating on a subcontractor management team and acting as the technical point of contact with suppliers for hardware development, qualification, and procurement.
  • Perform system‑related analysis, such as performance simulation, to support development of the fuel subsystem and integration with other aircraft subsystems.
  • Plan and support system level test execution, verification, data processing, and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct system level evaluations to verify requirements and ensure airworthiness criteria are met.
  • Attend internal program, customer, and/or supplier technical exchange meetings and/or formal program milestone reviews to provide and/or obtain progress status updates.
Basic Qualifications
  • Sr. Principal Responsible Engineer – Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline AND 8 years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree in STEM AND 6 years of relevant experience; OR PhD in STEM AND 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government Secret clearance, plus any required program access within a reasonable period of time.
  • Professional experience related to the development and integration of fuel subsystems or components in commercial or military aircraft applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering with focus on thermodynamic, fluid mechanic, and/or heat transfer disciplines.
  • Experience with aircraft subsystem development, including requirements definition, specification development, component analysis, procurement, source selection, integration and test and verification for advanced aircraft.
  • Experience performing thermodynamic, fluid mechanic and/or heat transfer analysis related to military/commercial aircraft and subsystems.
  • Experience modeling fluid systems using Amesim, MATLAB/Simulink, Thermal Desktop, Flomaster, and/or STAR-CCM+ software.
  • Familiarity with NX CAD software and Teamcenter PLM.
  • Experience with the military airworthiness certification process using MIL-HDBK‑516.
  • Familiarity with fuel system aircraft installation per MIL‑F‑17874.
  • Experience interpreting component detail drawings, specifications, installation drawings, and test procedures.
  • Experience supporting pursuits and proposals, including generating, reviewing, and approving technical proposals and BOEs.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership related to integrated product teams, including supplier and customer relations.
  • Demonstrated participation in mentoring activities.
Salary

Primary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 – $184,200.00 (general guideline; actual offer based on experience, education, skills and market conditions).

Benefits

Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results. Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
