Air Products' Rotoflow team in Bethlehem, PA or Houston, TX seeks a Sr Principal Mechanical Engineer to apply turbomachinery design, analysis, and project execution for high-speed rotating equipment worldwide.

This role emphasizes safety, collaboration, and innovative problem solving; you will drive cost reductions, develop toolsets, review drawings, and support after-market activities. Hybrid work with 4 days in-office.

Qualifications

• 10–15 years turbomachinery or rotating machinery design experience.
• Deep understanding of FEA, rotordynamics, bearing and seal technologies, and DFM.
• Detail-oriented, goal oriented, organized, creative, self-motivated, collaborative and customer focused.
• Excellent analytical, creativity, problem solving, time management, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills (written, verbal and presentation).
• BS Mechanical Engineering; advanced degree in turbomachinery a plus.
• Hybrid work schedule; travel: minimal.

Responsibilities

• Perform turbomachinery design analyses including FEA (stress, deflection, and modal), rotordynamics,
• Development of standardized product deliverables collaborating with Product Owners
• Executing mechanical design tasks related to awarded projects and product development initiatives
• Support aftermarket activities and engineering tasks
• Communicate with vendors on technical solutions
• Support root cause analyses (RCA) of equipment and field commissioning
• Drive engineering cost reductions and competitiveness with stakeholders
• Collaborate with customers to ensure proper design and integration
• Select components and materials for turbomachinery and systems
• Perform safety and operability reviews
• Collaborate with Business Improvement Team to develop tools and processes

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Perform various turbomachinery design analyses including FEA (stress, deflection, and modal), hand calculations, and rotordynamics,
• Development of standardized product deliverables collaborating with Product Owners,
• Executing mechanical design tasks related to awarded projects and product development initiatives, support of aftermarket activities and engineering tasks,
• Communicate with vendors on technical solutions,
• Support root cause analyses (RCA) of equipment and field commissioning and startup activities executed by the Aftermarket Team,
• Drive engineering and material cost reductions and competitiveness across project and product offerings collaborating with stakeholders,
• Collaboration with customers to ensure proper design and integration of equipment into the process,
• Select components and materials for turbomachinery and systems,
• Perform safety and operability reviews,
• Collaborate with various subject areas to finalize equipment designs,
• Checking and approving manufacturing drawings,
• Support of bid estimate development,
• Collaborate with the Business Improvement Team to develop new and standardized design engineering tools and work processes for streamlining projects and product development,
• Challenge norms with alternate solutions rooted in engineering fundamentals,

Degree and Licensing Requirements

• Technical Degree: BS Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related degree.
• Advanced degree and focus on turbomachinery design, rotordynamics, fluid film bearings, seals, design for manufacturability, and/or manufacturing processes a plus.

Working Conditions

• This position is based at our headquarters in Bethlehem, PA, or Houston, TX.
• Hybrid work schedule with 4 days in-office. Subject to change.
• Travel requirements: Minimal-under 10% for onsite customer support.
• Work environment: Indoors office setting at same site as testing lab and manufacturing floor.
