Job summary

Air Products is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to join our Rotoflow team in Bethlehem, PA. You will support the design, analysis, and execution of high-speed rotating equipment and support systems used globally, collaborating with experienced engineers to build expertise in turbomachinery design and development.

This early-career role offers exposure to all phases of product development, manufacturing, testing, and field support, with opportunities to impact reliability and cost competitiveness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in design of turbomachinery or rotating equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals including machine design, materials, stress analysis, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with rotating equipment, turbomachinery, or similar mechanical systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical design tasks supporting awarded projects, product development initiatives, aftermarket activities, and engineering studies.
  • Perform turbomachinery design analyses including finite element analysis (FEA), hand calculations, and rotordynamic evaluations.
  • Collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams to support the successful design and integration of equipment into customer processes.
  • Participate in safety and operability reviews to ensure safe and reliable product designs.
  • Select components and materials for turbomachinery equipment and support systems.
  • Review manufacturing drawings and engineering documentation for technical accuracy and compliance with design requirements.
  • Support proposal development activities, including technical evaluations and engineering estimates.
  • Assist with root cause analyses (RCA), troubleshooting efforts, commissioning activities, and field support initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop standardized products, engineering deliverables, and design best practices.
  • Support the development of engineering tools and work processes that improve productivity, efficiency, and design quality.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability, manufacturability, and cost competitiveness across product offerings.
  • Challenge conventional approaches through sound engineering principles, innovation, and creative problem-solving.
  • Promote safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement consistent with Air Products and Rotoflow values.

Air Products is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to join our Rotoflow team in Bethlehem, PA. In this role, you will support the design, analysis, and execution of proprietary high-speed rotating equipment and machinery support systems used by customers around the world. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers while building technical expertise in turbomachinery design and development.

Rotoflow, an Air Products business, is a leading turbomachinery OEM providing new equipment, aftermarket services, and engineered solutions to customers worldwide. For more than 75 years, Rotoflow has specialized in the design and manufacture of standard and custom-engineered cryogenic and warm gas centrifugal turbomachinery serving industries including industrial gases, petrochemicals, and hydrocarbons. Our products include compressor-loaded turbo-expanders, generator-loaded power recovery expanders, and low-cost dissipative expanders. In addition to new equipment, we provide upgrades, repairs, field services, engineering evaluations, reliability and troubleshooting support, training, remote diagnostics and monitoring, shop services, and replacement equipment for a wide variety of centrifugal and reciprocating machinery. Customers are supported globally through regional service centers backed by both regional and centralized execution teams.

Required Skills / Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in design of turbomachinery or rotating equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals including machine design, materials, stress analysis, and thermodynamics.

Preferred Skills / Abilities
  • Experience with rotating equipment, turbomachinery, compressors, pumps, expanders, or similar mechanical systems.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) tools and engineering simulation software.
  • Exposure to rotordynamic analysis methods and techniques.
  • Experience with 2D CAD and 3D modeling software.
  • Familiarity with bearing technologies, sealing systems, and mechanical component design.
  • Equipment startup, commissioning, testing, or plant integration experience.
  • Programming experience using Python, MATLAB, C#, VB, or similar languages.
  • Advanced degree or specialized coursework focused on turbomachinery, rotordynamics, manufacturing processes, or mechanical design.
Degree and Licensing Requirements
  • BS Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related engineering discipline required.
  • Advanced degree with focus on turbomachinery design, rotordynamics, fluid film bearings, design for manufacturability, and/or manufacturing processes is a plus.
Working Conditions
  • This is a full-time, direct hire, exempt position based at our headquarters in Bethlehem, PA.
  • Hybrid work schedule with 4 days in-office. Subject to change.
  • Travel requirements: Minimal, generally less than 10% for customer support and project-related activities.
  • Work environment: Office setting with exposure to engineering laboratories, testing facilities, and manufacturing operations.
