The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Microelectronics Design and Applications (MDA) pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. One of our most challenging new fields is Transformational Computing, which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical, new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law, advancing development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. You’ll work in a fast-paced team environment alongside a broad array of scientists and engineers to make these processing solutions a reality and deliver remarkable new advantages to the warfighter.

The Northrop Grumman Microelectronics Center (NGMC) is seeking a senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals who will be responsible for the project management of various mechanical design efforts, such as microelectronics packaging design, cryogenic component design, and other related efforts. A Mechanical Design Engineer interfaces with a multidisciplinary set of team members and subject matter experts on the program to best understand the desired product. In this role, you will direct the complete product development process, from gathering requirements, developing conceptual and final designs, presenting to internal customers, managing personal deliverable schedule, coordinating with supply chain as required, developing a bill of materials (BOM), overseeing the build of and ultimately managing the configuration of the completed product. You will direct the design phase of a project and should be skilled in the use of standard design tools, such as 2D CAD platforms (preferably AutoCAD), and 3D CAD platforms (preferably Siemens NX or SolidWorks). You must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance requiring a CI polygraph.

This position requires full time work onsite at our Linthicum, MD and/or Annapolis Junction, MD facilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Designing cutting edge mechanical components for use in cryogenic systems and subsystems - interfacing with electrical design counterparts, physicists, thermal and structural analysts, and manufacturing teams throughout the entire project lifecycle

  • Coordinating and leading drafting, procurement, manufacturing, and other engineering fields as needed for successful fabrication and delivery of completed products

  • Training and developing junior engineers to solve complex problems and deliver results

  • Maintaining configuration documentation and component supply during product use lifetime

  • Developing engineering documentation associated with mechanical design and assembly.

  • Supporting development of analysis/testing of delivered products for design verification to ensure a smooth transition into operation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science subject area with 8+ years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design engineering or related area, Master's Degree with 6+ years of relevant professional experience, or PhD with 3+ years of relevant professional experience.

  • Experience with SolidWorks, NX or other 3D modeling software

  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience with coordinating across multiple engineering groups to achieve project goals

  • Experience with mentoring junior engineers in skill development

  • Must be able to obtain a TS/SCI with polygraph clearance (U.S Citizenship is a prerequisite)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electronics packaging and cabling

  • Active TS/SCI with polygraph Clearance

  • Effective verbal and written communication, ability to work in a team environment

  • Experience with cryogenic systems

  • Experience with AutoCAD

  • Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis

  • Hands-on skills

  • Able to solve fit, form, and/or function issues and quickly generate solutions
