Job description

Interested in joining a growing company where you will work with talented colleagues, enhance a supportive and energetic culture, and be part of the climate solution? At Energy Solutions, we focus on the big impacts. We believe that market-based programs can be a powerful force to deliver large-scale energy, carbon, and water-use savings. Since 1995, we've harnessed that power to offer proven, performance-based solutions for our utility, government, and institutional customers.

We are currently seeking a full-time Senior Staff Engineer to join our Policy & Ratings Department as a mechanical equipment specialist focused on regulatory and research initiatives. As a member of the Energy Solutions team, you will have a broad impact on state, national, and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, city and state governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. This opportunity, paired with our mission-driven approach, provides an ideal environment for individuals eager to apply their skills towards a rapid transition to a low-carbon future.

The candidate selected will have experience across various technologies with deep expertise in HVAC, refrigeration, and other mechanical systems used in residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. This includes a comprehensive understanding of equipment efficiency and building/system design interactions to enhance energy performance. Technologies of particular importance include, but are not limited to: heat pump technologies (air-source, hydronic, VRF), energy and heat recovery systems, dedicated outdoor air systems, refrigeration, motor-driven systems (high-performance fans, pumps, air distribution), low/zero GWP refrigerants, thermal energy storage, and load management/demand flexibility. Experience with codes, standards, and stakeholder engagement—such as state and federal proceedings, test procedures, negotiated rulemakings, model codes, and reach/stretch codes—is helpful. Familiarity with building energy modeling software like EnergyPlus is desired.

Our organization operates primarily remotely, with offices in six locations. Employees residing within 40 miles of an office may be assigned to that location, with in-office requirements varying by team. Currently, we do not accept applications from residents of Alaska, Delaware, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Developing and leading strategies to optimize energy savings, load management, GHG reductions, and market transformation through codes, standards, or policies.
  2. Analyzing impacts of energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies within energy policy contexts.
  3. Overseeing product testing and data collection to address policy data gaps.
  4. Participating in industry working groups and technical committees for standards and test procedures.
  5. Building strategic partnerships with stakeholders to ensure feasible and equitable policy proposals.
  6. Writing reports on technical topics, including code change proposals, energy savings, and market impacts.
  7. Delivering technical presentations to diverse audiences.
  8. Delegating technical tasks to junior staff.
  9. Representing clients in public meetings, rulemakings, and docket comments.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical preferred).
  • At least 10 years of relevant engineering or work experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, report writing, and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to work in Pacific Time hours as needed.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (3-5 times per year).
  • Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and/or PE license.
  • Experience with energy codes (Title 24, ASHRAE standards, IECC, etc.), standards development, and energy modeling software like EnergyPlus, DOE-2, or APACHE.
  • Experience in public stakeholder engagement and code development.
  • Existing professional contacts in standards development.
  • Motivated to learn and support our mission.

Compensation is between $120,000 and $150,000 annually, commensurate with experience, including a comprehensive benefits package and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
