Job Summary:
The Senior Physical Therapist performs a variety of clinical and non-clinical duties to facilitate appropriate physical therapy services for patients and the community. The Senior Therapist works directly with staff clinicians, patients/families, physicians, and other internal and external customers. The position reports to the Director, Assistant Director, and/or Clinical Supervisor.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Evaluates patients and interprets examination findings to determine the nature and extent of dysfunction related to medical problems, birth defects, or health conditions, aiming to restore movement and functional activities. Performs clinical testing such as muscle strength, reflexes, sensation, coordination, and range of motion assessments, along with analysis and treatment of postural, gait, and ADL disorders.
- Establishes a plan of care to meet specific goals, considering patient age, medical history, and dysfunction.
- Administers or prescribes modalities and other physical agents.
- Develops exercise programs and patient care plans.
- Demonstrates professional competence and clinical reasoning throughout all phases of physical therapy assessment and treatment.
- Adheres to safety precautions based on patient age, medical history, and treatment type.
- Reassesses clinical signs regularly to evaluate treatment effectiveness and modify plans as needed.
- Implements treatment programs directly with patients.
- Delegates parts of the treatment plan to appropriate supportive personnel.
- Coordinates treatment plans and participates in discharge planning with healthcare team members.
- Participates in patient care rounds and case management conferences as appropriate.
- Provides education and advice to patients and their families.
- Discharges patients from therapy when it is no longer necessary or appropriate.
- Follows organizational policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
- Maintains cleanliness of assigned areas and reports equipment issues.
- Provides accurate, timely documentation of services per regulatory and organizational standards.
- Collaborates with management to meet compliance requirements.
- May be trained to serve diverse patient populations based on departmental needs.
- Participates in clinical competency assessments for PT Assistants and PT Aides.
- Provides excellent customer service and upholds principles of responsibility.
- Acts as a resource for department operations, including orientation, training, and addressing operational issues.
- Ensures safety, maintenance, and proper levels of equipment and supplies.
- Contributes to staff performance evaluations and provides clinical input.
- Works with management on staffing models and operational efficiency.
- Senior duties may include handling member complaints, triaging referrals, scheduling, and policy development.
