Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, ocular anatomy, ophthalmic pharmacology, ocular motility and diseases of the eye. Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment procedures including visual field testing, contact lenses, ophthalmic surgery, and the care and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and equipment. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and administer preliminary screening examinations.

Responsibilities

• Develop, monitor, and review clinical ophthalmology employees to assure the highest-level functioning team and demonstrates core standards of exceptional customer service.
• Implement operational and strategic plans to improve ambulatory and surgical work assignments.
• Prepare and support clinical staffing work schedules including ambulatory, OR, in addition to on-call weekends, nights and holidays.
• Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with UMMC and regulatory standards.
• Assess the equipment, instrument, and supply needs for surgical procedures and ensures availability and proper functioning of surgical and ambulatory instruments, equipment, and supplies during clinic and OR surgical procedures.
• Provide basic surgical support in ambulatory and surgical areas including room set up, sterile field management, handling of specimen and instruments, and room turnover.
• Follow infection control policies, AORN recommendation practices, OSHA guidelines, and other regulatory requirements in the daily practice in order to assure a safe work environment for self, coworkers, and patients.
• Perform administrative duties such as reviewing and scheduling patient appointments, surgeries, taking patient histories, answering phones and handling correspondence.
• Takes anatomical and functional ocular measurements, tests ocular functions including visual acuity, visual fields, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry readings, corneal topography, strabismus measurements, retinoscopy and sensorimotor functions.
• Administers topical ophthalmic medications as directed by the ophthalmologist. Provides patient education.

Requires frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking.
