The Sr. Mechanical Technician is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant transfer, installation, preservation, and commissioning support of TM2500 gas turbine units and associated balance-of-plant equipment. This position provides technical leadership for mechanical crews during equipment disassembly, transportation preparation, logistics coordination, site receipt, reassembly, alignment, testing, and startup activities.
The successful candidate will ensure adherence to OEM requirements, industry standards, safety regulations, project schedules, and quality expectations while serving as the primary mechanical lead for turbine transfer operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise mechanical technicians, contractors, and craft personnel involved in TM2500 turbine transfer activities.
- Coordinate daily work assignments and prioritize tasks to meet project milestones.
- Serve as the primary field contact for mechanical issues during mobilization, transfer, and installation phases.
- Support project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and execution strategies.
Mechanical – Transfer & Installation
- Oversee mechanical disassembly, preservation, packaging, transport preparation, and reassembly of TM2500 turbine systems.
- Verify proper handling, lifting, rigging, and transportation procedures for major turbine components.
- Coordinate equipment receipt inspections and condition assessments upon arrival at destination sites.
- Ensure proper mechanical alignment, coupling installation, and equipment integration.
Technical Support
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment issues and develop corrective action plans.
- Interpret technical drawings, OEM manuals, specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Coordinate with engineering, operations, logistics, and commissioning teams to resolve technical concerns.
- Review and validate completed work to ensure compliance with project requirements.
Safety & Quality
- Enforce all site safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, lifting protocols, and environmental requirements.
- Conduct job hazard analyses, toolbox meetings, and safety observations.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with quality standards, OEM procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Participate in inspections, audits, and quality control reviews.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, inspections, equipment condition reports, and punch-list items.
- Prepare daily progress reports and communicate project status to management.
- Track material requirements, tooling, and spare parts inventories.
- Document deviations, corrective actions, and lessons learned.
Team Development
- Mentor and train mechanical technicians on turbine systems, maintenance practices, and transfer procedures.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Support workforce development and technical knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience with TM2500.
- Technical degree, military gas turbine training, or equivalent mechanical apprenticeship preferred.
- 7+ years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience.
- 3+ years of supervisory or lead technician experience.
- Demonstrated experience with gas turbine installation, maintenance, outage work, or equipment relocation projects.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and OEM manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and maintenance documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with LM2500, or aeroderivative gas turbine systems.
- Knowledge of rigging, heavy lifts, transportation planning, and equipment preservation practices.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.
- Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities.
- Familiarity with power generation, temporary power, or emergency generation projects.
Physical & Travel Requirements
- Extensive travel required (up to 75%-100%) to project sites throughout south Texas.
- Ability to work extended rotations and support field operations during critical project phases.
- Ability to work in industrial environments, including climbing, lifting, and prolonged standing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended project assignments.
- Ability to work in varying weather and site conditions.
