Orion Steel Group, L.L.C. is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Reliability Engineer to monitor and improve asset health across mechanical and process systems.
You will use condition data and RCFA to drive proactive interventions, tying mechanical reliability to process performance for safer, more stable plant operations. You will develop maintenance strategies leveraging RCM/RCF analysis, implement condition-monitoring programs, and work closely with Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering to optimize
Reporting to the Reliability Manager but working under limited supervision, the Sr. Mechanical Reliability Engineer is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and improving asset health across mechanical systems and process performance to ensure safe, stable, and efficient plant operations. This role focuses on identifying and eliminating reliability risks through a combination of equipment reliability engineering and process optimization. The position plays a critical role in linking mechanical condition, process variability, and failure modes, driving proactive interventions that improve asset availability, reduce unplanned downtime, and optimize lifecycle performance. Close collaboration with Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering is essential to advance defect elimination, risk mitigation, and asset health strategies. Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is committed to maintaining and promoting a safe, healthy and injury-free environment. It is required for all jobs.
Own and continuously assess the asset health of mechanical systems using condition monitoring data and process indicators, identifying degradation patterns by correlating equipment condition (vibration, temperature, oil analysis, wear) with process variables (load, throughput, variability), and developing and implementing strategies to improve asset stability and operating envelope control. Lead reliability improvement and defect elimination efforts for mechanical systems, systematically identifying and resolving chronic failures, and facilitating comprehensive Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) that incorporates both mechanical and process-related contributors to drive sustainable performance gains. Develop and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for mechanical assets using RCM and FMEA principles, ensuring maintenance activities are aligned with actual asset health, criticality, and failure modes to maximize reliability and operational effectiveness. Lead the development and advancement of condition monitoring and diagnostic programs for mechanical assets (including vibration, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasonics, and NDT), interpreting data to diagnose failure modes and drive corrective actions, while deploying AI-driven technologies to continuously monitor critical asset health and optimize Remaining Useful Life (RUL). Integrate process reliability with mechanical asset performance by partnering with Operations to identify process-driven reliability risks (e.g., instability, overloading, improper operating conditions), and defining and optimizing operating windows to protect equipment and enhance overall reliability. Provide reliability engineering expertise in capital projects and equipment design, ensuring reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost effectiveness are embedded into new installations and modifications to support long-term asset performance. Leverage data analysis and reliability modeling to enhance mechanical asset performance, utilizing KPIs and statistical tools (MTBF, MTTR, Weibull analysis, SPC) to identify trends and failure patterns, and translating data into actionable insights that drive continuous reliability improvement. Support risk and asset strategy for mechanical systems, contributing to asset criticality assessments and lifecycle asset management (LCAM) strategies, while prioritizing maintenance and capital investments based on risk, asset condition, and business impact to optimize long-term reliability and performance.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering required 7+ yrs of experience in reliability, maintenance, or process engineering in an industrial environment. Experience in steel or similar process-based manufacturing environments preferred. Demonstrated experience in linking equipment performance with process conditions. CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) or obtained within the first year of employment. RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) Training. Experience implementing advanced condition-based monitoring programs. Experience improving process stability to enhance equipment reliability. Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or higher Required or obtained within the first year of employment.
Strong understanding of: Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), FMEA/FMECA, Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA), Predictive Maintenance (PdM) technologies, Asset health monitoring (equipment + process integration), Process variability, control impacts on equipment life. Proficiency in: Reliability modeling (Weibull, fault tree analysis), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Data-driven problem solving. Proficiency in CMMS/EAM Systems, MS Office, MS Project, Minitab. Ability to read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, and process documentation. Strong collaboration between Maintenance and Operations. Ability to influence operating practices and protect asset health. System thinker with focus on end-to-end asset performance. Self-directed and capable of managing multiple priorities.
