Job description

Sr. Mechanical Engineer (Critical Infrastructure)

Join to apply for the Sr. Mechanical Engineer (Critical Infrastructure) role at SpaceX.

About SpaceX: SpaceX was founded with the belief that a future where humanity explores the stars is more exciting than one where we do not. The company is developing technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

Role Overview: As a member of the construction and infrastructure team, you will design, build, and activate some of the world’s most technically advanced manufacturing facilities. You will be the subject matter expert on HVAC, compressed air, piping, dust collection, and other critical fluid systems at HQ. This role involves design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of fluid system elements, working with other engineers, architects, and internal customers to support these goals and drive global impact, ultimately aiding in making life multiplanetary. The position is based in Hawthorne, CA.

Responsibilities
  • Own and be the subject matter expert on fluid/HVAC components across campus – compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, dust collection systems.
  • Perform CAD modeling and design of these systems.
  • Conduct fluid analyses for pressure balance, component design allowable, and consumables determination.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure components meet production, avionics, GNC, mission operations, and other SpaceX program requirements.
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and reliable; work with production to facilitate smooth transition to reliable manufacturing processes.
  • Support material selection, sizing, and procurement.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional experience with fluids components such as valves, pumps, COPVs, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure transducers, or temperature sensors.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with liquid and/or gas handling systems.
  • Experience with data acquisition, test instrumentation, and control components.
  • Experience with HVAC systems and air ducting.
  • Proficiency with CAD packages like NX, understanding of GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with structural analysis for hardware optimization and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of pressurized and lightweight aerospace structures.
  • Ability to work independently.
Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Compensation and Benefits

Pay range: $125,000 - $175,000 per year, with considerations for experience and skills. Benefits include stock options, bonuses, comprehensive medical plans, 401(k), paid leave, and more.
