Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. in Hood River, OR is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design, test and supervise production of high-altitude electronic equipment and rotating electrical machines.

You will lead mechanical packaging development, conduct thermal, structural, and dynamic analyses, and manage mid-size projects with subcontractors, traveling up to 25% as needed. U.S. citizenship and ITAR compliance required.

Qualifications

  • 8–12 years of mechanical engineering experience, including at least 5 years in production rotating electrical machines or electronics packaging for aerospace or industrial applications.
  • Experience developing requirements specifications per MIL‑STD‑961D or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks for modeling and ANSYS for structural and fatigue analysis.
  • Experience with thermal management and bonding techniques for extreme environments.

Job description

Summary

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer applies engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment. Leads and supports mechanical design, testing, and production of electrical machines as well as design of electronics packaging for high altitude aerospace applications. Leads or supports mechanical packaging development effort for electronic equipment that withstand stringent environmental requirements (mass, volume, thermal, vibration). Manages mid‑size development projects outsourced to sub‑contractors.

Responsibilities
  • Leads or supports thermal, structural, dynamic, and fluid flow analysis of electronics equipment.
  • Leads testing and data collection in laboratory and field.
  • Models mechanical devices and selects proper material.
  • Performs stress and fatigue analysis; performs thermal analysis and selects bonding material.
  • Develops mechanical drawings and specifies dimensional tolerances.
  • Develops assembly instructions and test procedures.
  • Develops test plans and procedures to verify designs.
  • Works on complex issues requiring in-depth knowledge of variable factors.
  • Executes team assignments following schedule, milestones, and resources; may coordinate activities of other personnel as Team Lead.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • 8–12 years of relevant technical experience in Mechanical Engineering, including at least 5 years developing for production rotating electrical machines, electronics equipment packaging solutions, and/or mechanical device solutions for industrial and aerospace applications.
  • Experience developing requirements specifications for mechanical subsystems per MIL‑STD‑961D or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks for mechanical modeling, ANSYS for structural and fatigue analysis, ANSYS Icepak for thermal analysis.
  • Experience with SolidWorks design of electrical rotating machines for high‑performance applications.
  • Experience with thermal management trade‑offs and solutions and material properties.
  • Experience with bonding techniques for extreme environmental conditions using various adhesives.
  • Experience with manufacturing methodologies of electrical machines.
  • Experience with creating and maintaining product document trees and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Experience with test and measurement techniques, such as torque transducer calibration and instrumentation.
Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies
  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Recognition by a reputable international engineering society such as ASME at senior membership level or higher, desired.
  • Familiarity with MIL‑STD‑810 or DO‑160.
  • Familiarity with MIL‑STD‑961D or equivalent for developing subsystem technical specifications.
  • Full understanding of engineering principles in the discipline, works independently.
  • Effectively articulates concepts to technical and non‑technical staff.
  • Excels in fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment with small teams.
  • Strong initiative and drive to meet company objectives.
  • Owns responsibility for work products.
  • Committed to learning from mistakes and improving performance.
  • Effective problem‑solving, analysis, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Focuses on teamwork and collaboration.
Physical Demands
  • Work in office and production environment constantly.
  • Sit and stand for long periods; operate computer, telephone and keyboard frequently.
Clearance and ITAR

U.S. Citizenship required. Must be willing to work on government contracts and obtain a security clearance. Position requires access to information subject to ITAR and/or EAR compliance; applicants must qualify as a U.S. person or be approved for an export license.

Salary

$107,370 – $163,815
