Job summary

Waters Corporation's TA Instruments unit in New Castle, Delaware, is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join the Systems and Mechanical Engineering team.

You will contribute to advanced materials characterization technologies and rapid prototyping in a multidisciplinary environment. You will prototype, test, and iterate designs, integrate mechanical, electronics and controls, perform simulations, and lead design reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in a research and development environment.
  • Strong 3D modeling skills and familiarity with CAD tools.
  • Experience integrating mechanical designs with electronics and controls.
  • Proven ability to lead design reviews and communicate results clearly.

Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Overview

The Systems and Mechanical Engineering team is looking to hire a Mechanical Engineer in our New Castle office at the TA Instruments business unit.   • You will play a key role in driving innovation and developing concepts for new measurement technologies in material characterization, working with a multi‑disciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
  • This role emphasizes rapid risk retirement through fast prototyping and concept evaluation, supporting priority new product development and research projects, and collaborating across business functions to deliver solutions that meet market and customer needs.
Typical Tasks
  • Conceive and develop concepts to meet the customer requirements.
  • Prototype and evaluate concepts rapidly, identify risks early, and develop targeted test plans for efficient mitigation and rapid development cycles.
  • Communicate status, results, conclusions, and next steps with clarity, highlighting impact and actionable plans.
  • Integrate mechanical, electronics, controls, and coding into prototypes to accelerate concept evaluation and enable rapid iterations for efficient product development.
  • Participate and lead design reviews and provide feedback where appropriate in collaboration with multidisciplinary team.
  • Work with project and product management leads on technical ideation and risk retirement strategies and solutions.
  • Work closely with the Engineers and cross‑functional team to develop product designs.
  • Communicate concerns/suggestions/improvements relating to engineering concerns and product life cycle management.
  • Ensure full documentation of mechanical design including BOM, drawings, and procedures.
  • Propose and conduct simulations where relevant.
Education
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree, 5‑7 years experience in a research and development environment.
Experience
  • Prototype design, test and analysis.
  • Design and run targeted tests to quickly identify knowledge gaps and improve designs.
  • Proven ability to integrate multidisciplinary elements into prototypes for evaluation and validation.
  • Root cause analysis methodology.
  • Extensive experience with 3D modelling (Unigraphics / Solid Works / or Equivalent Tools).
  • PDM and change process experience.
  • GD&T knowledge and experience.
Skills
  • Adept at originating and interpreting engineering designs and concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal, technical communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Understanding of principles of physics and mechanical engineering disciplines (thermodynamics, structural mechanics and fluid dynamics principles).
  • Experience of furnace and heater design, transducer design and operation, basic controls principles.
  • Strong materials science knowledge and familiar with testing principles and techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams to design and execute experiments and test plans, review designs and brainstorm ideas.
  • Proficient in statistical data analysis, technical presentation, and clear communication of results.
  • Well versed in simulation tools for mechanical and thermal problems, preferably Ansys/Matlab.
  • Proven design for manufacture experience assembly.
  • Hands‑on experience of fabrication/assembly techniques and working with machinists.
