Sr Manufacturing Engineer - Paint Application
Job Purpose
To lead development, evaluation, optimization and implementation of new and existing paint delivery and coating application technologies at various locations throughout L-P’s manufacturing facilities.
In this position you will have the opportunity to:
- Identify, develop, and lead implementation of new, and modifications to existing, paint process technologies to improve operational efficiency, product quality and cost.
- Create, document and communicate technical specifications for coating production equipment. Work closely with internal stakeholders, technical contractors, paint suppliers and coating equipment suppliers to provide design requirements and oversee design, testing, installation and operational qualification and ongoing optimization and problem resolution.
- Develop and manage implementation strategies that minimize redundancy, emphasize standardization and maximize efficiency across all coating manufacturing equipment, including serving as on-site technical resource and SME for coating applications for business.
- Responsible for creating technical drawings and creating application systems library.
- Plan and manage benchmarking and other competitive research activities including investigation of new application technologies and enhancements; analyze and communicate results.
- Develop and implement processes for measuring and improving transfer efficiency and yield.
- Assume responsibility for personal safety and for the safety performance of all personnel, projects, and programs managed.
- Ensure effective communications and coordination with all related departments.
- Perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
- Perform other duties as necessary.

What do I need to be successful?
- Minimum 15 years’ hands-on experience in industrial-scale paint delivery and application equipment design and optimization, preferably focused in wood products manufacturing and/or water-based coatings, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform responsibilities of this position.
- Experience with AutoCAD.
- Expertise in general scientific practices, statistical analysis of data, lab-scale and manufacturing-scale coating application technology, equipment, process operating parameters and product attributes.
- Ability to gather and analyze data and develop conclusions and recommendations from that information in a production environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; interpersonal skills, people development, team building, leadership skills, etc.
- Demonstrated experience in coatings analysis tools to measure application process performance.
- Excellent business acumen and technical judgment.
- Familiarity with regulatory standard and environmental considerations related to coating application systems in industrial environments.
- Strong relationships with coating and coating delivery and application equipment suppliers.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of and understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- Skill in identifying, developing, and delivering technical training.
Education
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science or closely-related field.
- Lean Six Sigma or similar certifications desired.
Work Environment
- Office, lab and manufacturing plant environments.
- Moderate to heavy travel required.
