Job summary

Lincoln Financial Group seeks a Senior Manager in Group Medical Underwriting to lead a team of medical underwriting professionals, overseeing policy adherence, inventory planning, and performance management. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's).
  • Minimum 5+ years of risk management with substantial background in medical underwriting group coverages including 2+ years of managerial/leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operations of the Medical Underwriting team, including daily inventory planning and management.
  • Oversee evaluation of medical underwriting requirements and risk selection for employees covered under group policies.
  • Conduct complex case reviews and second sign-offs, evaluating risk and determining approval or rejection.
  • Monitor operational performance and results, establish priorities, communicate key goals, and hold the team accountable for successful outcomes.
  • Partner with senior leadership to develop and execute the organization's vision and strategic direction.
  • Create and implement strategic plans that improve operational efficiency, strengthen capabilities, and support scalability.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging medical underwriting practices and share relevant trends and information with the team.
  • Administer medical underwriting rules and guidelines, application quality audits, and applicable insurance laws and regulations.
  • Provide training, development opportunities, and stretch assignments that build team capabilities and support career growth.
  • Provide team members with clear, honest, and constructive feedback to support their development and performance.
  • Lead organizational and enterprise initiatives by supporting effective change management and encouraging employee engagement.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, and retain high-performing employees.
  • Build organizational capabilities that support current priorities and future business needs.
  • Serve as a resource to team members and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build strong professional relationships with key partners, with an emphasis on collaboration with distribution and project management teams.
  • Incorporate Quality Assurance and Training recommendations into employee development and performance measurement.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, guidelines, and company policies and procedures.
  • Remain current on professional and industry trends.
  • Identify and recommend improvements while continuously developing new skills, procedures, and processes.

The Role at a Glance

As a Senior Manager in Group Medical Underwriting, you will manage a team of medical underwriting professionals responsible for underwriting life and disability insurance submitted under group policies. You will oversee adherence to policies and procedures, daily inventory planning and management, strategic planning, operational performance and results, case reviews, and second sign-offs. You will also set priorities, communicate key goals, track performance, and train team members to ensure success.


What you'll be doing

What we're looking for

Must-haves:



  • Life and disability insurance underwriting expertise

  • Medical Underwriting expertise

  • 4 Year/Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's)

  • 5+ Years of risk management experience with substantial background in medical underwriting group coverages including 2+ years of managerial, supervisory, and/or demonstrated leadership experience

The pay range for this position is with anticipated pay for new hires between the minimum and midpoint of the range and could vary above and below the listed range as permitted by applicable law. Pay is based on non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to work experience, education, location, licensure requirements, proficiency and qualifications required for the role. The base pay is just one component of Lincoln's total rewards package for employees. In addition, the role may be eligible for the Annual Incentive Program, which is discretionary and based on the performance of the company, business unit and individual.
