Job summary

The University of Rhode Island is seeking a Sr. Maintenance Technician to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of machinery, buildings and equipment at the Narragansett Bay Campus.

The position operates under general supervision and may supervise helpers. Typical duties include serving plumbing, steam and heating systems, repairing sterilizers, fabricating and installing pipe, and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of standard practices in trades related to building maintenance.
• Ability to supervise a small group of helpers.
• Ability to read pencil sketches and diagrams and work from them.
• Capable of performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance on plumbing fixtures, steam lines, steam heating and cooking equipment.
• Repair hospital sterilizers.
• Cut, thread and install pipe for steam and water lines.
• Repair lighting, wall plugs and furniture; maintain and repair doors and fixtures.
• Operate machine shop equipment and perform painting and masonry tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of machinery, buildings and equipment; to perform work of a skilled level in several trades; and related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives general directions and instructions from a superior with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment; work is reviewed on completion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises helpers and others who are assigned to assist.

Illustrative Examples Of Work Performed

• To perform complex duties related to the maintenance of: plumbing fixtures, steam lines, steam heating and cooking equipment.
• To repair hospital sterilizers.
• To cut, thread and install pipe for steam and water lines.
• To repair wall plugs and lighting equipment; to repair and recondition fans.
• To make repairs and adjustments to laundry washing, drying and pressing machinery; to supervise helpers in the oiling and greasing of this equipment.
• To operate lathes, millers, drills and other machine shop equipment.
• To paint buildings, walls or other surfaces.
• To perform masonry work in connection with buildings, foundations, walks and walls.
• To repair doors, door frames and furniture; to fabricate and install temporary partitions; to operate and maintain wood lathes, sanders, joiners, power saws, planes and related power and hand tools.
• To make repairs to roofs and install flashing and spouts.
• To make minor repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
• To weld and braze metals by use of arc and acetylene welders.
• To do related work as required.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A working knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and processes involved in trades related to general building maintenance; a working knowledge of the operation of mechanical equipment; a working knowledge of the use of common tools and materials; the ability to make varied repairs without supervision; and ability to supervise a small group of helpers; the ability to work from pencil sketches and diagrams; and related capacities and abilities.

Education And Experience

EDUCATION: Such as may have been gained through completion of ten school grades; and

EXPERIENCE: Such as may have been gained through employment in building and plant maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades.

OR: any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
