Job summary

The University of Rhode Island seeks a Sr. Maintenance Technician to perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance across plumbing, steam systems, electrical and related building equipment at the Narragansett Bay Campus.

The role includes supervising helpers, interpreting pencil sketches/diagrams, and applying diverse trades in a calendar-year, permanent capacity on site.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and processes in general building maintenance.
  • Ability to supervise a small group and work from sketches/diagrams.
  • Experience in building/plant maintenance across multiple trades.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain plumbing fixtures, steam lines, steam heating and cooking equipment.
  • Repair hospital sterilizers and install/repair piping for steam and water lines.
  • Operate and maintain shop machines and power tools, including lathes and drills.
  • Oversee helpers in oiling/greasing equipment and perform repairs as required.

SR. MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Duties and Responsibilities

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform various skilled andsemi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of machinery, buildings andequipment; to perform work of a skilled level in several trades;and related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives general directions and instructions from a superior with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment; work is reviewed on completion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises helpers and others who are assigned to assist.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • To perform complex duties related to the maintenance of: plumbing fixtures, steam lines, steam heating and cooking equipment.
  • To repair hospital sterilizers.
  • To cut, thread and install pipe for steam and water lines.
  • To repair wall plugs and lighting equipment; to repair andrecondition fans.
  • To make repairs and adjustments to laundry washing, drying andpressing machinery; to supervise helpers in the oiling and greasingof this equipment.
  • To operate lathes, millers, drills and other machine shopequipment.
  • To paint buildings, walls or other surfaces.
  • To perform masonry work in connection with buildings, foundations,walks and walls.
  • To repair doors, door frames and furniture; to fabricate andinstall temporary partitions; to operate and maintain wood lathes,sanders, joiners, power saws, planes and related power and handtools.
  • To make repairs to roofs and install flashing and spouts.
  • To make minor repairs on refrigeration and air conditioningequipment.
  • To weld and braze metals by use of arc and acetylene welders.
  • To do related work as required.
Required Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A working knowledge of thestandard practices, materials, tools and processes involved intrades related to general building maintenance; a working knowledgeof the operation of mechanical equipment; a working knowledge ofthe use of common tools and materials; the ability to make variedrepairs without supervision; and ability to supervise a small groupof helpers; the ability to work from pencil sketches and diagrams;and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION: Such as may have been gained through completion of tenschool grades; and

EXPERIENCE: Such as may have been gained through employment inbuilding and plant maintenance work which has involved at least twoof the building, electrical or mechanical trades.

OR: any combination of education and experience that shall besubstantially equivalent to the above education andexperience.
