You'll be the team's go-to expert on export carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and trade compliance. You'll solve escalated shipping problems, identify cost savings, and help improve our logistics operations.

This is a senior individual-contributor role. You'll share your expertise across the business, train and support team members in logistics and other departments, lead improvement projects, and support day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities
Trade Compliance
  • Serve as the company's trade compliance specialist for imports and exports.
  • Assign and maintain HTS classifications and Schedule B numbers for exports.
  • Manage Free Trade Agreement programs, including USMCA, Korea FTA, and Morocco FTA. Determine eligibility, collect supplier certificates, and claim preferential duty rates.
  • Conduct denied party screening for customers, suppliers, and freight partners, resolving potential matches.
  • Oversee EEI filings and review customs entries for accuracy.
  • Maintain compliance records and support audits.
International Freight and Documentation
  • Review import and export documentation for accuracy before shipments move.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders and customs brokers on bookings, customs clearance, and duty-related questions.
  • Advise Sales and Customer Service on Incoterms and international shipping lead times.
Complex and High-Priority Shipments
  • Plan and manage complex shipments, including oversized and project cargo, expedited freight, and multi-leg international moves.
  • Determine optimal transportation modes and routes for domestic freight (LTL, truckload, parcel, intermodal) and international freight (ocean FCL/LCL and air).
  • Independently resolve escalated shipping issues, including major delays, customs holds, and damaged freight.
Carrier and Vendor Relationships
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for carriers, freight forwarders, and customs brokers.
  • Support freight bids and rate negotiations through data analysis and recommendations.
  • Track customer shipments from origin through delivery, including customs clearance.
  • Monitor carrier performance, including on-time delivery, damage, and claims, and address performance issues.
Cost Analysis and Reporting
  • Analyze freight spending and identify cost-saving opportunities through mode shifts, shipment consolidation, and carrier changes.
  • Audit freight invoices and resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Develop and maintain KPI reports covering freight costs, on-time delivery, and transit times.
Process Improvement and Mentoring
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for shipping and logistics.
  • Serve as a power user for the company's TMS and ERP systems, supporting testing and implementation of system improvements.
  • Lead logistics and trade compliance improvement projects.
  • Train and support colleagues across departments.
  • Provide operational coverage for the Director of Operations when needed.
Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of Incoterms, import/export documentation, and customs clearance.
  • Experience analyzing freight costs and supporting carrier negotiations.
  • Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel; Epicor Kinetic experience is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex shipping challenges.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to train colleagues and collaborate across departments.
Preferred
  • Certified Export Specialist (CES) designation or customs broker coursework.
  • Experience working for a freight forwarder, 3PL, customs broker, or carrier.
