Job description

A Washington, D.C. based government contracting firm is seeking an internal Sr. Human Resources Specialist to run the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department including on-boarding / off-boarding, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company policies and practices as well as process payroll and maintain employee time records.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
  2. Implements new hire orientation and employee recognition programs.
  3. Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  4. Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  5. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  6. Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  7. Enters, maintains, and/or processes information in the payroll system; information may include employees’ hourly rates, salaries, commissions, bonuses or other compensation, time worked, paid leave and holidays, deductions and withholding, address changes, and other information.
  8. Ensures proper processing of payroll deductions for taxes, benefits, charitable contributions, and other deductions.
  9. Records and processes federal and state payroll tax deposits.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

  9. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  10. Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.
  11. Proficient with or the ability to quickly learn payroll software.
