Baylor Genetics is seeking a Senior Genetic Counselor Assistant to support genetic counselors and clinical teams in delivering high-quality genetics services. You will manage patient records, assist with family history intake, and help with education for patients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in genetics, biology or a related field.
  • Certification as a Genetic Counselor Assistant or relevant experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a healthcare setting, ideally in genetic counseling.
  • Solid understanding of genetic terminology and basic genetic principles.
  • Experience handling patient information in compliance with privacy regulations (HIPAA).

Job description

Job Summary: The Senior Genetic Counselor Assistant plays a key role in supporting genetic counselors and healthcare teams in the delivery of high-quality genetic counseling services. This role involves managing patient records, assisting with family history assessments, conducting patient intake interviews, and organizing clinical information. The Senior Genetic Counselor Assistant will also assist in providing educational resources to patients and support genetic counseling sessions. This position requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with patients and healthcare providers.

Education and Experience:
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Genetics, Biology, or a related field.

Certification as a Genetic Counselor Assistant or relevant experience preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare setting, ideally in genetic counseling or a related field.

Strong understanding of genetic terminology and basic genetic principles.

Experience assisting in genetic counseling sessions and handling patient information in compliance with privacy regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Intake and Record Management:

Conduct initial patient interviews, collect detailed family history, and document relevant clinical data to assist genetic counselors.

Ensure accurate and timely entry of patient data into electronic health records (EHR) systems.

Coordinate and maintain patient files and test results, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.

Assistance in Genetic Counseling Sessions:

Assist genetic counselors during patient consultations, providing relevant medical information and education.

Educate patients on genetic conditions, testing options, and potential outcomes under the guidance of genetic counselors.

Provide emotional support to patients during counseling sessions as needed.

Patient Education and Communication:

Prepare educational materials related to genetic conditions and testing options for patients.

Respond to patient inquiries, providing basic information about genetic testing and results.

Communicate with patients to schedule follow-up appointments or provide test results.

Research and Administrative Support:

Assist in organizing and maintaining research projects, including recruitment of participants for clinical studies.

Help with data collection, analysis, and reporting for research purposes.

Coordinate educational workshops or outreach programs for patients or healthcare professionals.

Collaboration with Healthcare Providers:

Collaborate with physicians, genetic counselors, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated patient care.

Serve as a liaison between the genetic counseling team and other departments to ensure effective communication and support.

Quality and Compliance:

Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and policies, including confidentiality and privacy laws.

Assist in maintaining departmental compliance with accreditation standards.

Genetic Counseling Knowledge: Solid understanding of genetics, genetic conditions, and the ability to discuss genetic testing options and outcomes.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Frequently required to sit, stand, and use hand and finger dexterity.
