Sr. FPGA Engineer, Direct to Device, Amazon Leo

Amazon Leo is a long-term Amazon program to increase global broadband access through a constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO); providing low‑latency, high‑speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Direct‑to‑Device (D2D) is Leo's initiative to enable standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly to satellites, filling coverage gaps in remote areas.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with systems architects, hardware engineering design teams, and firmware/software teams to bring up and test complex systems combining FPGAs, custom ASICs, and RF.
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex real‑time embedded systems.
  • Lead the design and implementation of programmable logic for next‑generation antenna systems.
  • Design software for high‑volume phased‑array manufacturing.
  • Develop calibration software for on‑orbit applications.
  • Characterize subsystems and systems related to antennas.
  • Design automation for 2D and 3D structures.
  • Develop bring‑up tools and testing for phased‑array systems.
  • Have ownership of one or more FPGA bitstreams.
  • Collaborate with network‑communication system architects to define, design, implement, test, release, and support networking functions targeted to FPGA technology.
  • Collaborate with RF and Digital Communications engineers to implement digital logic functions in FPGAs.
  • Drive trade‑off analysis to benefit the customer experience.
Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of non‑internship professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years designing or architecting new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, and scaling).
  • 5+ years programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, or Ruby.
  • Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large‑scale infrastructure.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and build processes.
  • Experience with modern ASIC/FPGA design and verification tools.
  • Experience writing test scripts (Python preferred) to validate FPGA images in hardware.
  • 5+ years experience in FPGA design and implementation using System Verilog.
  • Experience with Xilinx or AMD (Altera) FPGAs.
  • Experience with uArchitecture, RTL coding, FPGA optimization for timing & power, simulation, and validation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 6+ years deploying and operating in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Master's degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • Experience with phased‑array antennas and/or other complex RF systems.
  • Experience with high‑speed networking, SerDes, 50G/100G Ethernet, or Interlaken.
  • Familiarity with AXI4 and AXI Streaming interfaces.
  • Proven track record of successfully fielding and supporting FPGA and ASIC products.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $151,200 – $204,600 annually (USA, WA, Redmond). The total compensation package includes sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
