Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in the United States is seeking a Senior Service Technician to install, service and train customers on packaging machinery. You will lead on-site maintenance, troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and work closely with service management, engineering and sales to improve field operations.

The role requires 10+ years of hands-on mechanical experience, PLC experience (Allen Bradley preferred), OSHA awareness, and willingness to travel 80–85%

• Travel 80–85% domestically and internationally.
• Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic components safely and effectively.
• PLC experience preferred (Allen Bradley).
• OSHA procedures knowledge and safe work practices.

SENIOR SERVICE TECHNICIAN

$65,625-$109,375 Salary Non-Exempt

Travel: 80%-90%

The Opportunity

Provides technical service, and training expertise to customers in the installation and maintenance of Smurfit Westrock packaging machinery. This assistance includes machine audits, planned maintenance and other customer requested technical services. Provides independent support to the customer. Capable of gathering information and can bring the knowledge from the field back to Service Management, Engineering and Sales.

• Conducts exit interviews with customers prior to leaving facility.
• Manages on-site installation, repair, and maintenance of Smurfit Westrock machinery.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, and electrical related problems in a safe, effective, and efficient manner both in person and over the phone/web.
• Train operators on the safe use and proper care of the Smurfit Westrock equipment
• Train maintenance personnel in the safe use and proper maintenance of Smurfit Westrock equipment.
• Ability to accurately define and explain repairs made, and proper maintenance procedures to plant and internal personnel.
• Ability and willingness to work varying hours as required to meet customers’ production schedule.
• Follow all customer policies and procedures while in their facilities.
• Ability to work with and effectively communicate with plant personnel at all levels.
• Ability to effectively comprehend directions being communicated by senior level technicians and other authorized personnel.
• Provides input/feedback for continuous improvements and changes.
• Complete FAT/PDI (acceptance testing) of machines as needed.
• Organization and lead of significant machinery events
• Working knowledge of general functions and setup of multiple machinery platforms.
• Ability to troubleshoot, repair and assemble electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components safely and correctly with little to no supervision.
• Ability to interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics required to troubleshoot and repair Smurfit Westrock equipment.
• Ability to interpret assembly drawings required for repair and accurate assembly of equipment.
• Ability to understand and communicate ladder logic as required to effectively repair and troubleshoot software related issues.
• Knowledge of basic electrical codes.
• PLC experience required, prefer Allen Bradley
• Ability to legally travel both domestically and internationally up to 80-85%.
• Ensures service reports are properly completed and signed by the customer prior to being delivered to the customer.
• Expense reports are completed and turned in accordance with company policy.
• Assists in ensuring that purchase orders for all sold services and parts are obtained.
• Clears service calls and customer visits with service manager or authorized personnel.
• Communicates daily with service manager or authorized personnel when out on service or site visits.
• Assists in machinery check out and assembly as needed.
• Provides input/feedback for continuous improvements and changes.
• Trains and mentors junior service technicians.
• Reports to: Service Manager or authorized personnel
• Maintains internal relationships with all fellow employees
• Maintains relationship with customers and Smurfit Westrock plant personnel
• Proven mechanical experience of more than 10 years.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) procedures.
• Self-motivated individual.
• Certifications, technical degrees, or military training are preferred but not required.
• Field service work is a plus, but not required.
• Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Strong mechanical skills also involve understanding how different components work together, following safety procedures, and using the right tools for the job.
• Moderate PC skills: i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, search and navigate the internet, Microsoft applications.
• Ability to author accurate and concise service and expense reports.
• Passport is required.
• Adaptive with the ability to learn new technologies.
• Be a team player and collaborate within a cross functional organization.
• Able to follow strict safety guidelines.
• Able to lift and carry heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.

The salary range for this position is $56,625.00 - $94,375.00, depending on your role, level, and location. The range listed is also the expected pay for roles in Illinois and Colorado. The benefits for this role include short-term bonus incentive, health, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and paid sick leave as required by applicable state/local law, 15 days of paid vacation, and 11 days of paid holidays, subject to annual change. Your pay will be based on factors such as your skills, experience, and education.
