Job summary

Blue Origin LLC in Seattle, WA is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to analyze load paths, primary and secondary spacecraft structures, and integrate analyses with loads and dynamics to support the Lunar Transportation program.

You will develop FE models, perform strength checks, generate test plans, and work with NASA partners to deliver safe, reliable hardware within cost and schedule constraints.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in structural analysis.
  • Strong foundation in static/dynamic structural fundamentals.
  • Experience with spacecraft/aircraft loads and environments.
  • Proficiency with FEA tools (Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, Optistruct).

Responsibilities

  • Analyze load paths from concept to drawing release.
  • Analyze primary and secondary spacecraft structures.
  • Integrate structural analysis with loads and dynamics.
  • Develop, refine, and correlate Finite Element Models to tests.
  • Prepare strength checks and analysis reports.
  • Create test and verification plans and reports.
  • Support configuration development and trade studies.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. This individual will use their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to join our team and positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required. You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth. This position reports to the Design Section inside of the Lunar Transportation business unit. As part of a growing, hardworking, and curious team of design engineers, you’ll be deployed to programs that shape the future of Blue Origin. Your skill in the analysis of spacecraft structures to support delivery of safe, reliable, ready to install hardware that meets requirements, while doing so within theallocatedcost and schedule requirements, will lead to a rewarding career with Blue Origin. Responsibilities
  • Analysis of load path from conceptual to drawing release and hardware creation
  • Analysis of primary and secondary spacecraft structures
  • Integration of structural analysis with loads and dynamics environments
  • Finite Element Model development, refinement, validation, and correlation to tests
  • Strength checks and analysis report generation
  • Test and verification plan and report generation
  • Support configuration development and trade studies
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering
  • 8+ years of experience
  • Solid foundation of structural static/dynamic fundamentals
  • Passion for spacecraft structural/environmental loads development/validation
  • Ability to solve a variety of static and dynamic structural problems using physics-based analytical methods (hand calculations, in-house tools, and 3rd party commercial analytical tools)
  • Experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle, or automotive in some of the following areas: External loads ,Vibro-acoustic analysis Thermal loads
  • Analysis using Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, or Optistruct
  • Desired: Vehicle load path definition and strength analysis
  • Analysis of metallic and/or composite structures (skin-stringer, fittings, sandwich panels, etc)
  • Composite design and analysis skills in any thermoset, thermoplastic, metal matrix and ceramic matrix composites
  • Manufacturing methods, material selection, testing, characterization & allowables development
  • Experience testing materials, joints, components and vehicles
  • Structural optimization using standard industry codes (Optistruct, HyperSizer, Nastran Sol 200, Abaqus, Adams)
  • Experience with ProEngineer Wildfire 4 / Creo Parametric or greater
  • Experience with Human spaceflight
  • Experience with composites
Base Pay Range

CO applicants is $133,500.00 - $186,898.95 WA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20 Other site ranges may differ.

Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
