Job summary

HyAxiom is seeking a Sr. Engineer, Electrical Engineering in South Windsor, CT to lead design and integration of fuel cell–based microgrids for data centers. You will optimize energy management, develop control strategies, and ensure high reliability and safety in complex power systems.

The role requires 5+ years in microgrid or data center power design, strong schematics and DFMEA/PFMEA skills, and collaboration with mechanical, software and operations teams to deploy robust energy solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
  • 5+ years in designing microgrid or data center power systems with knowledge of power systems, energy management, and renewable integration.
  • Understanding of internal data center needs is a plus.

Role & Responsibilities
Fuel Cell Integration Into Microgrids
  • Design and integrate fuel cell systems into microgrid architectures, ensuring seamless operation as primary or backup power source.
  • Optimize performance, efficiency, and scalability for high‑demand data center applications.
  • Integrate fuel cell‑based microgrids with the existing electrical grid, ensuring proper synchronization and effective load management.
Fuel Cell/Electrolyzer Requirements Definition
  • Propose and support changes to fuel cell/electrolyzer electrical systems and onsite equipment integration.
  • Maintain certifications and understand grid protection functions.
  • Write, maintain and mitigate risk to product requirements.
  • Perform DFMEA/PFMEA and system‑level trade studies.
  • Create 1‑line and 3‑line electrical schematics.
  • Document sequence of operation and product operation manuals.
  • Perform design verification testing.
  • Create presentations for management.
  • Electrical harness design and updates.
  • Design and certify safety systems.
Microgrid System Design & Optimization
  • Develop and implement site‑specific microgrid systems that combine fuel cells, energy storage, renewable sources, and conventional generators.
  • Focus on reliability, redundancy, and optimal energy management.
  • Provide technical support and deliver complex energy solutions.
Power Electronics & Control Systems
  • Work with power electronics, DC‑DC, inverters, rectifiers and controllers to distribute power generated by fuel cells.
  • Develop control strategies for coordinated operation with other energy sources.
Reliability & Redundancy Design
  • Ensure fault‑tolerant, resilient designs meeting high‑availability requirements.
  • Implement redundancy strategies such as N+1 configurations for critical components.
Collaboration With Cross‑Functional Teams
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers, software engineers, system/MBOP engineers and data center operations teams.
  • Communicate effectively to ensure timely integration and deployment.
Compliance & Safety Standards
  • Ensure systems meet regulatory requirements, IEEE, IEC, and safety protocols for data centers.
  • Keep updated on environmental regulations and sustainability goals.
Troubleshooting & System Support
  • Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for fuel cell‑based microgrid systems.
  • Perform regular performance optimization and address failures or efficiency issues.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
  • 5+ years in designing microgrid or data center power systems with knowledge of power systems, energy management, and renewable integration.
  • Understanding of internal data center needs is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience integrating renewable energy sources and energy storage into microgrid solutions.
  • Hands‑on experience with self‑generation technology integration and real‑time optimization.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity for energy systems and best practices for securing fuel cell microgrid architectures.
  • Experience in LV, MV and AC/DC voltage system design.
  • Fuel cell/electrolyzer background a plus.
Certifications (Preferred)
  • Professional certifications related to renewable energy, microgrid systems, or energy management (e.g., IEEE).
Technical Skills
  • Applying first‑principles logic and methods.
  • Strong background in power electronics for fuel cell systems.
  • Understanding of microgrid operation and energy distribution.
  • Write, maintain and mitigate risk to product requirements, perform DFMEA/PFMEA.
  • Create schematics, operation manuals, presentations, harness updates.
  • Support design issues and root‑cause analysis.
  • Create design review presentations throughout process.
Problem‑Solving & Analytical Skills

Excellent ability to analyze system performance, identify issues, and propose effective solutions for high reliability, efficiency, and resilience.

Communication & Collaboration

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

Work Environment
  • Occasional travel to data center sites for commissioning, integration, and troubleshooting.
  • On‑site work.
