Job summary

Exponent, Inc. seeks a Senior Engineer for its Vehicle Engineering Practice in Farmington Hills, MI. You will contribute to testing and analysis of ADAS, EVs and AVs, while applying mechanical and control-system knowledge to vehicle performance and safety projects.

You will lead projects, collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, and develop specialized expertise in automotive technology through hands-on testing, data analysis, and reporting. A PE license is preferred or pursued.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. with 2+ years of experience (or MS with 4+ years) in mechanical, automotive engineering or a related field.
• US work authorization; no immigration sponsorship required.
• Experience in ADAS, EVs/AVs, and vehicle safety, design, testing and deployment.
• Field and/or lab measurement experience.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; clear written communication.
• P.E. license or willingness to obtain one.
• Versatile, team‑oriented, able to travel & work overtime when needed.

• Support consulting projects analyzing ADAS/AV/EV testing, and emissions-related performance.
• Develop specialized automotive expertise in testing and performance evaluation.
• Set up and execute full-scale vehicle tests and component/system evaluations.

Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Engineer with expertise in ADAS, EVs and/or AVs for our Vehicle Engineering Practice in our Farmington Hills, MI office. The candidate should have a fundamental interest in the automotive field, be technically talented with good hands-on skills, have excellent communication skills, and be motivated to grow professionally within Exponent.

You will be responsible for

• Supporting existing consulting projects that involve the analysis and testing of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS); automated vehicles; electric vehicles; vehicle, engine, and component performance (e.g., emissions; fuel economy; noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH); drivability; acceleration; etc.); federal emissions and fuel economy testing; mechanical failures; safety assessments; federal and state regulations; and the design of consumer and industrial products
• Developing specialized expertise in the automotive field such as the design, performance, and testing of existing or emerging automotive technology
• Setting up and executing various test programs, including full-scale vehicle tests and component or control systems evaluations
• Managing projects from initiation to completion and ensuring that Exponent meets its deadlines and produces exceptional work product

You will have the following skills and qualifications

• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience (or an M.S. and 4+ years of experience)
• Presently legally authorized to work in the United States; no immigration sponsorship or processing required
• Experience in ADAS, electric vehicles (EVs), automated vehicles (AVs), and/or vehicle safety, vehicle and automotive system design, development, testing, and deployment
• Knowledge of automotive systems
• Field and/or lab measurement experience required
• Must have analytical and problem-solving skills
• Must have knowledge of dynamics, mechanical design, and control systems
• P.E. license or the willingness to obtain a P.E. license
• Must be versatile, team-oriented, willing to work overtime and travel when required
• Must possess strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to synthesize technical information and present it to specialists and non-specialists alike
• Clear written communication and technical writing skills are required
• Must have a proven dedication to quality and accuracy

Our consultants are rewarded for their technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. Exponent's total compensation plan is consistent with its expectations of the quality and quantity of work performed and with the professional standards set by Exponent. At the Associate and Senior Associate level, total compensation includes base salary, bi-weekly bonuses for high-intensity efforts, annual bonus and 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.

The base salary range for this position is dependent on experience and capabilities which will be assessed during the interview process.
