Job summary

Exponent is seeking a Senior Engineer for its Vehicle Engineering Practice in Farmington Hills, MI. The candidate will analyze and test ADAS, EVs, and AVs, and assess vehicle performance and safety.

You will develop automotive expertise, design and run tests, and manage projects from start to finish while communicating results to clients. A Ph.D. in a related field with 2+ years of experience (or MS with 4+ years) and US work authorization are required.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field with 2+ years of experience.
• Presently legally authorized to work in the United States; no immigration sponsorship or processing required.
• Experience in ADAS, EVs, AVs, and/or vehicle safety, vehicle and automotive system design, development, testing, and deployment.
• Knowledge of automotive systems
• Field and/or lab measurement experience
• Must have analytical and problem‑solving skills; strong knowledge of dynamics, mechanical design, and control systems
• P.E. license or willingness to obtain one
• Must be versatile, team‑oriented, willing to work overtime and travel when required
• Must possess strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to present it to specialists and non‑specialists
• Clear written communication and technical writing skills
• Dedication to quality and accuracy

Responsibilities

• Supporting existing consulting projects involving analysis and testing of ADAS, EVs, AVs, and vehicle performance.
• Developing expertise in automotive design, performance, and testing of existing or emerging automotive tech.
• Setting up and executing test programs, including full‑scale vehicle tests and component evaluations.
• Managing projects from initiation to completion and ensuring deadlines and high‑quality output.

Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Engineer with expertise in ADAS, EVs and/or AVs for our Vehicle Engineering Practice in our Farmington Hills, MI office. The candidate should have a fundamental interest in the automotive field, be technically talented with good hands‑on skills, have excellent communication skills, and be motivated to grow professionally within Exponent.

Job responsibilities

• Supporting existing consulting projects that involve the analysis and testing of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS); automated vehicles; electric vehicles; vehicle, engine, and component performance (e.g., emissions; fuel economy; noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH); drivability; acceleration; etc.); federal emissions and fuel economy testing; mechanical failures; safety assessments; federal and state regulations; and the design of consumer and industrial products
• Developing specialized expertise in the automotive field such as the design, performance, and testing of existing or emerging automotive technology
• Setting up and executing various test programs, including full‑scale vehicle tests and component or control systems evaluations
• Managing projects from initiation to completion and ensuring that Exponent meets its deadlines and produces exceptional work product

Skills and qualifications

• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience (or an M.S. and 4+ years of experience)

• Experience in ADAS, electric vehicles (EVs), automated vehicles (AVs), and/or vehicle safety, vehicle and automotive system design, development, testing, and deployment

Compensation

Our consultants are rewarded for their technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. Exponent's total compensation plan is consistent with its expectations of the quality and quantity of work performed and with the professional standards set by Exponent. At the Associate and Senior Associate level, total compensation includes base salary, bi‑weekly bonuses for high‑intensity efforts, annual bonus and 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.

The base salary range for this position is dependent on experience and capabilities which will be assessed during the interview process.
