Job summary

ENTRUST Solutions Group seeks a Sr. Design Technician to support electric distribution system design projects. This role combines hands-on field work with drafting, calculations, and mentoring of junior team members.

You will perform field data collection, design distribution layouts, and prepare construction drawings, BOMs, and documentation while applying safety rules and regulatory standards. Travel for fielding assignments is required.

Qualifications

• 2-5 years of experience in a design technician, engineering technician, or utility design role.
• Foundational experience in utility distribution network design, overhead/underground layouts, pole line design.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting/design software.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility standards.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; client-facing communication skills.
• Willingness to travel for fielding assignments (mileage reimbursed).

Responsibilities

• Perform field visits to collect data on utility poles and electrical infrastructure for design packages.
• Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems and prepare drawings, BOMs, and documentation.
• Provide calculations such as pole loading, voltage drop, and permitting requirements.
• Conduct pole analysis modeling, GIS reviews, and prepare/update design prints.
• Support pre-construction activities and answer design/site questions.
• Review client records and data to identify conflicts and incorporate updates.
• Lead junior technicians through data collection, drafting, and standards.
• Manage multiple projects, meeting quality, schedule, and client expectations.
• Apply safety rules, client standards, and regulatory requirements (RUS, NESC, permitting).
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and construction crews; participate in walkdowns and coordination meetings.
• Work independently with strong communication and documentation practices.

What You’ll Do

• Conduct pole analysis modeling, develop materials lists, perform GIS reviews, and prepare or update design prints.


• Support pre-construction activities and answer design and site-related questions.


• Review client records, GIS data, and field information to identify conflicts, verify accuracy, and incorporate updates.


• Lead junior technicians through data collection, drafting, and utility design standards.


• Manage multiple projects while meeting quality, schedule, and client expectations.

Here’s What You’ll Need

• 2-5 years of experience in a design technician, engineering technician, or utility design role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in gas and/or electric distribution design.


• Experience with DDS design software tools.


• Knowledge of GIS systems such as SmallWorld or Bentley Utility Designer.


• Associate degree or advanced technical degree in a related field.


• Experience mentoring junior technicians.


• Strong attention to detail, quality, and safety practices.
