Job summary

ENTRUST Solutions Group in Albany, NY is seeking a Sr. Design Technician to support electric distribution system design projects, combining field work with drafting and analysis.

You will perform field visits, develop overhead and underground layouts, prepare construction drawings, BOMs, and perform calculations. Mentoring junior staff and coordinating with engineers are part of the role. A related associate degree is preferred, with 2–5 years experience and CAD proficiency.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years of experience in a design technician/engineering technician role.
• Foundational experience in utility distribution network design and layouts.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting software.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings and utility standards.
• Willingness to travel for field assignments.

Responsibilities

• Perform field visits to collect data on utility poles and electrical infrastructure.
• Design overhead and underground distribution systems and prepare construction drawings and BOMs.
• Provide calculations such as pole loading and voltage drop, and assist with permitting requirements.
• Conduct pole analysis modeling, GIS reviews, and prepare design prints.
• Support pre-construction activities and address design and site questions.
• Review client records and field data to identify conflicts and update designs.
• Lead junior technicians through data collection, drafting, and standards adherence.
• Manage multiple projects to meet quality, schedule, and client expectations.
• Apply safety rules, client standards, and regulatory requirements (RUS, NESC).
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and construction crews in walkdowns and meetings.
• Work independently with strong communication and documentation practices.

What You’ll Do

• Perform field visits to collect data on utility poles and electrical infrastructure, ensuring accuracy for design packages.
• Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems, preparing construction drawings, bills of materials, and documentation.
• Provide calculations such as pole loading, voltage drop, easement validation, permitting requirements, and cost estimating.
• Conduct pole analysis modeling, develop materials lists, perform GIS reviews, and prepare or update design prints.
• Support pre-construction activities and answer design and site-related questions.
• Review client records, GIS data, and field information to identify conflicts, verify accuracy, and incorporate updates.
• Lead junior technicians through data collection, drafting, and utility design standards.
• Manage multiple projects while meeting quality, schedule, and client expectations.
• Apply company safety rules, client standards, and regulatory requirements (RUS, NESC, permitting).
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and construction crews, participating in walkdowns and coordination meetings.
• Work independently with strong communication and documentation practices.

Here’s What You’ll Need

• 2–5 years of experience in a design technician, engineering technician, or utility design role.
• Foundational experience in utility distribution network design, overhead/underground layouts, pole line design, etc.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting/design software.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility standards.
• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Client-facing experience and strong communication skills.
• Willingness to travel for fielding assignments, as needed (mileage reimbursed).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in gas and/or electric distribution design.
• Experience with DDS design software tools.
• Knowledge of GIS systems such as SmallWorld or Bentley Utility Designer.
• Associate degree or advanced technical degree in a related field.
• Experience mentoring junior technicians.
• Strong attention to detail, quality, and safety practices.
