The Senior DBA is responsible for providing subject matter expertise in one or more database platforms. This role requires performing DBA duties along with interaction with cross-division subject matter experts in Infrastructure, Storage, Analytics & business users of mission-critical environments of HFT's database technologies. This position requires strong data architecture, logical, and physical modeling, and effective communication skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise to one or more database technology.
- Ability to perform core DBA functions in more than one database management system
- High-availability strategies including Clustering, Mirroring, Replication, Log shipping, & AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Standby Servers.
- Installation, administration, and troubleshooting of heterogeneous database systems
- Allocate systems storage and develop plans for future growth requirements
- Experienced, self-reliant individual able to solve complex database issues with little instruction
- Provide mentorship to DBA’s and Jr. DBA’s instilling solid database concepts; leveraging industry best practices
- Defines high-level standards for database management (and own responsibility for them)
- Analyze system performance; identify problems and implement solutions; review and tune complex SQL statements
- Work with the Database, IT and DevOps teams to maintain databases and perform database maintenance including patch and release management
- Goes deep into one or more areas of specialization (e.g. Performance tuning, Hardware / Virtualization / Storage, High Availability & Disaster Recovery, Automation & code for management of a high volume of instances), and own responsibility for complex issues in that area
- Performs logical design and physical implementation of data services layer.
- Diagnose user issues and responding “tickets”
- Modifies database configuration in response to ongoing issues and new releases
- Creates database objects such as stored procedures, triggers, and packages, and performs tuning, database administration, and troubleshooting.
- Supports multiple system environments (in-house and external) for development, testing, and production releases.
- Proactively diagnose and resolves problems affecting database performance
- Proactively tune database systems such as analyzing query plans, index tuning, troubleshooting database blocking and resolving deadlocks to meet business SLAs
- Participates in 24x7x365 on-call support rotation, as well as evening and weekend maintenance and deployment cycles as needed.
- Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.
- This person will work with a cross-section of internal IT organizations, including other DBA's, analysts, developers, and management teams.
- Plan and implement effective backup, recovery and business continuity strategies.
- Perform system builds and comply with security standards, release management, change management and quality assurance standards
- Ability to Identify and implement process improvements in various database aspects - Control, performance monitoring, user access and database security
- Adhere to corporate standards with respect to problem resolution, change and configuration management
- Able to work individually as well as in a team-oriented environment
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
