Job summary

Montana State University's Campus Recreation unit seeks a Sr. Coordinator of Fitness to lead the fitness program, including group fitness and personal training. The role oversees operations, staff development, budgeting, safety, and program delivery in a dynamic university setting.

The successful candidate will manage certification courses, coordinate facilities and equipment, and collaborate with campus partners to promote wellness across the MSU community. Evening/weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, health promotion, education, sports management or a related field or combination of education and/or applicable experience.
  • Current CPR, AED and first aid certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • NCCA Accredited fitness certification is required or preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day operations of group fitness and personal training programs.
  • Assist with budget planning and purchasing for fitness program areas.
  • Coordinate group fitness instructor and personal trainer certification courses.
  • Lead staff recruitment, training, and performance feedback.

General Statement

Student Wellness area is part of the Division of Student Success at MSU Bozeman. Student Wellness provides support and services for student and community health and wellbeing at MSU and is comprised of three major departments: Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and Campus Recreation.

Campus Recreation encourages personal development, enhances academic productivity, and enriches wellbeing for students and the MSU Community. Campus Recreation is comprised of Fitness Programs, Competitive Sports, Outdoor Recreation, Activity Classes (ACT), and Member Services.

Position Overview

The Sr. Coordinator Fitness will provide leadership and expertise in the fitness program within Campus Recreation. Areas of oversight include group fitness and personal training. Responsible for hands‑on operations including both group fitness program and personal training program supervision, customer service, fitness program equipment operations and maintenance, delivery of programs and services, staff/student development and training, safety and risk management. The qualified candidate will be required to work Monday-Friday and occasional nights and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides supervision for day-to-day operations of both group fitness and personal training programs.
  • Recommends and implements strategy and practices for program development and enhancement to include revenue generation strategy, client/participant recruitment and retention, staff recruitment and retention.
  • Staff supervision includes hiring, mentoring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluation, and payroll processes for group fitness instructors and personal trainers to include student staff and part‑time contractors.
  • Leadership, recruitment and supervision of student employees and graduate assistants.
  • Provides ongoing development and support for supervised staff members through regular training and in‑services.
  • Helps coordinate group fitness instructor and personal trainer certification courses.
  • Assists with the annual budget submission and purchasing for the fitness program areas.
  • Under the guidance of Associate Director Programs and department marketing staff, implements publicity strategies to maximize program participation.
  • Ensures the highest possible level of customer service to provide exceptional experiences.
  • Implements program assessment tools to assess program needs, participant satisfaction, and overall program feedback.
  • Assists with inventory, maintenance and troubleshooting of all Studio and Fitness Floor equipment and supplies to ensure quality, safety, and security.
  • Provides ongoing program updates including participation, assessment data, and financial status.
  • Assists with Activity Classes for Credit (ACT) as needed, and collaborates with Health and Human Development academic partners.
  • Establishes and maintains systems and processes to mitigate risk.
  • Responds to the requests from students, patrons, and employees for programs and services in related areas.
  • Coordinates and maintains healthy working relationships with multiple university departments and organizations.
  • Collaborates on overall health and wellness programming within Student Wellness. Creates and maintains inter-disciplinary programming and patient/client centered, holistic approach to wellness and fitness in collaboration with Student Wellness colleagues.
  • Performs personal training and/or teaches group fitness classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, health promotion, education, sports management or a related field, or a combination of education and/or applicable experience.
  • Current certification in CPR, AED and first aid or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • NCCA Accredited fitness certification.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health promotion, higher education, sports management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated supervision experience, including the development of student staff.
  • Professional level experience with fitness programming and development.

Ability to work variable schedule which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus events.

Ability to teach a wide variety of fitness formats and work with clients with diverse needs.

Must hold a current CPR/AED certification at the time of appointment or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
