Job summary

Carrier is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer in East Syracuse, NY to support HVAC cooling and heat pump development. You will write software and mechanical controls requirements, lead control box development, and ensure agency certifications while collaborating with a small local team and broader groups.

You will analyze system capabilities, interact with marketing and customers to define requirements, and prepare technical presentations for qualification boards, driving continuous improvement

Qualifications

Summary

The Senior Controls Engineer is a critical position, and the selected individual will play a key role in product development: supporting HVAC cooling and heat pump equipment development, developing software and mechanical controls requirements for new products, control box development, and secure product requirement compliance and agency certification. The candidate will actively participate in the New Product Development process applying electrical and software expertise to optimize the release of next generation HVAC equipment for building applications. The Senior Controls Engineer works in a smaller local team of 3‑5 engineers, with interaction with larger extended teams and supporting groups.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expertise in controls and control systems and the development of next‑generation high‑efficiency and environmentally friendly HVAC&R and electronic control systems.
  • Conduct and coordinate moderately complex tests for control and diagnostic systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions.
  • Conduct multidisciplinary research assisting equipment designers in the planning, design, development and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software.
  • Analyze system capabilities and determine end‑user needs to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements and input data acquisition to ensure current and future needs of the business are met.
  • Engage with cross‑functional and cross‑regional teams to understand and translate product requirements into control system requirements.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts across technical and non‑technical organizations.
  • Prepare presentations for Qualification Review Boards including demonstrating the use of Quality System deployment tools.
  • Provide reliability analysis of components and systems.
  • Develop and coordinate engineering documents and releases.
  • Document process improvements as part of standard engineering work.
  • Develop and coordinate customer documents (instructions and manuals).
  • This position does not support employer sponsorship.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical and/or software controls or a Master’s degree with 3 years of experience in mechanical and/or software controls.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 1‑2 times per year, internationally (Mexico) or domestically.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of SAP and Creo.
  • Familiarity with heat pumps.
  • Knowledge of CSA/ANSI, UL standards and other industry standards such as AHRI, ASHRAE, DOE, EPA, NEC, UL/CSA.
  • Proficient with engineering design processes and tools.
  • Ability to interact with marketing and customers to define software functional requirements.
  • Ambitious self‑starter who thrives in a fast‑paced design environment.
  • Ability to develop continuous improvement projects to influence and drive change.
  • Project management and interpersonal skills to work within an engineering design team.
  • Ability to work with geographically dispersed teams and a diverse cultural environment.
  • Experience with mechanical and/or software controls for HVAC applications or similar applications; thermal management, building automation systems, etc.
Pay Range

The annual salary for this position is between $79,000.00 and $158,000.00. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.

Other Compensation

Short‑term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements, may be available.
