UC San Diego Health is seeking an experienced internal communications professional to join the executive communications team and advance strategic initiatives across the systemwide health network in San Diego. The Senior Communications Manager, Systemwide Initiatives, will translate complex information into clear content for employees and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.
  • Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health is expanding its award-winning executive communications team and seeking an experienced internal communications professional to help advance strategic initiatives across one of the nation's leading academic health systems.

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Executive Communications, the Senior Communications Manager, Systemwide Initiatives develops and executes communications strategies that support UC San Diego Health's growth, institutional priorities, mission, and vision. This role partners with leaders across the organization to translate complex information into clear, timely, and actionable communications for team members (employees) and affiliated stakeholder audiences.

Key responsibilities include researching and developing internal communication plans and project briefs; drafting and editing content across multiple channels; coordinating stakeholder review and approvals; building communications within digital platforms such as SharePoint and Emma; and managing the timely distribution of communications.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and strong writer with exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and project management experience. Success in this role requires sound judgment, strong research skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to work effectively with senior executives while respecting leadership time and priorities. Candidates should be comfortable navigating sensitive topics and developing communications that support a diverse and inclusive community of caregivers, clinicians, and support teams.

The successful candidate will possess outstanding writing and editing abilities and be skilled at transforming technical, nuanced, and jargon-heavy information into content that is accurate, easy to understand, and actionable.

Additional responsibilities include supporting the communication needs of the UC San Diego Health Newsroom and other health system and campus communication channels through research, writing, and content development assignments.

This position also serves in rotating emergency response roles, including:

  • Serving as the health system's Public Information Officer approximately six times per year for one-week on-call rotations.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation supporting Hospital Command Centers during activations and emergency events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Related experience: Content creation and distribution, including web pages, memorandum, promo copy, and presentation slides.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • This position requires participation in the on-call rotation for one week (Wednesday through Wednesday) approximately 5 to 6 times per calendar year.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $100,100 - $187,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $47.94 - $89.80

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
