Job description

UCSF Health is looking for an Internal Communications Manager to help shape how the organization informs, engages, and aligns its 20,000‑person workforce. You’ll join a team of sharp, mission‑driven communicators who are trusted partners to leaders across the health system. We bring clarity to big priorities, elevate the stories that matter, and give employees the information they need to understand where the organization is headed. It’s fast‑moving, collaborative work with real impact on how people show up every day.

Responsibilities

In this individual contributor role, you’ll support leaders across system functions and major business units—helping them translate complex initiatives into clear, timely, and meaningful communication for employees. You’ll also contribute to the coordinated internal communications program for UCSF Health, partnering closely with colleagues to maintain consistency, share insights, and support both day‑to‑day operations and systemwide priorities.

This role requires an experienced communicator who is comfortable operating independently, collaborating across functions, and supporting leaders. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast‑paced environment, balances an enterprise perspective with focused leadership support, and brings sound judgment to a wide range of topics and situations. You must be able to work onsite in San Francisco at least one day a week.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $101,300–$216,700, with a target entry point of $150,390+, depending on experience. For more information on benefits and total compensation, visit https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/compensation-and-benefits/index.html.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years of relevant experience.
  • Five years or more of experience in internal communications, preferably in a healthcare or large organizational setting.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute internal communications strategies that drive employee engagement.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and formats.
  • Strong analytical skills to measure communication effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Proficiency with internal communications tools, including intranet platforms, email management systems, and content management tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and provide strategic counsel to leaders.
  • A hands‑on, execution‑focused approach with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong project management skills with experience leading large‑scale communication initiatives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti‑racism, which are foundational values central to UCSF’s mission.
  • Ability to work onsite in San Francisco at least one day per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an academic medical center or large healthcare system.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and/or health sciences.
  • Familiarity with employee engagement strategies and best practices.
  • Knowledge of change management communication principles and experience supporting organizational transformations.
Location

San Francisco, CA – Mission Bay (SF). Full‑time, days, 8‑hour shift, flexible work style, with an onsite requirement at least one day per week.
