Senior Blaster

JOB SUMMARY:

To manage location assets and personnel at the customer site to meet established customer requirements in support of the location's strategic plan. Must be certified by Austin Powder Company to blast.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Must satisfactorily perform each of the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities listed below.

Location/Site Operations:

  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by complying with MSHA, OSHA, ATF, & DOT regulations within the work area.
  • Reviews drill patterns and diagrams, determines product and shot layout necessary to meet customer needs.
  • Performs all necessary duties to prepare designated area for blasting including verification of blast shelter, blast equipment, drill pattern stemming, face, and blast area.
  • Supervises personnel at the customer site/blast area.
  • Builds and sustains rapport with the current customer base to increase market share and ensure growth, including pricing or budget controls.
  • Communicates blast details with all personnel on job site and performs duties necessary to prepare and detonate shot.
  • Conducts Pre/Post Shot Safety Audit at every shot service event.
  • Completes necessary event paperwork/shot report documentation as per Austin Powder policy.
  • Complies with customers' policies/procedures, and ensures that the shot crew does the same.
  • Coordinates the handling of all customer issues, blast area incidents, and/or public concerns related to the event with appropriate APC personnel.
  • Communicates regularly with the sales representative and/or Location Manager regarding customer accounts, as required by the Location.

Location Assets:

  • Maintains current working knowledge of vehicles and equipment used in shot service.
  • Manages the event to ensure that assets are maintained and operated in a safe, professional manner at the customer's site that contributes to the location's operational effectiveness.

Personnel:

  • Develops and maintains positive work relationships with co-workers, customers, vendors and government agencies.
  • Displays work behaviors that are honest and ethical in pursuit of APC business goals.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by assuring compliance at the location, at customer sites, and during transit as required by regulation and company policy.
  • Complies with APC inventory management procedures.
  • Completes and maintains necessary paperwork or software programs as required by company policies and procedures, Department of Transportation, or other federal or state agencies.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

May perform any of the marginal functions, duties, and responsibilities listed below.

  • Assist or perform the duties of any location position (as qualified).

ERGONOMIC CONDITIONS:

Physical Ergonomic Conditions: Please see attached Physical Standards for Job Description. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Outdoor climate and terrain. Exposure to dust, noise, oils, greases, and other debris.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is also required to stand; sit; use hands to operate controls, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.
  • Loads and unloads 40-60-pound product bags or boxes from company trucks. Unloading may require repeatedly carrying product/boxes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 21 as required by ATF.

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (GED) degree.

Licenses and Certification:

Must possess upon hire or acquire within 12 months of hire the following certification.

  • Austin Powder Company Blasting Certification.
  • State Blaster's License, as required.
  • CDL Class A with Hazmat endorsements - preferred.
  • MSHA Safety.
  • First Aid Certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years certified blasting experience.
  • Must be technically capable to blast any quarry or mine serviced by the location.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

  • Must demonstrate competency and proficiency in the following skills and/or abilities.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product bulletins, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to proficiently operate blasting software and equipment including: 2D Profiler, ABS, Seismograph, Global Position System, Electronic Blast Report.
