Honeywell Aerospace US LLC seeks a senior Assistant General Counsel – HSE to shape legal strategy on environmental remediation and HSE litigation. You will oversee regulatory enforcement matters, coordinate with remediation and redevelopment groups, and counsel on complex multi-site liabilities across manufacturing and operations.
The role requires a J.D., active bar admission, and 8+ years of environmental and OSHA-focused practice, with in-house experience preferred.
Serve as a senior member of the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) legal team at Honeywell Aerospace, a new public aerospace company. This position reports to the General Counsel - HSE within the Legal Department and works closely with the Remediation and Redevelopment Group, senior HSE operations and compliance leadership, and cross-functional partners across the organization. The role carries significant responsibility for shaping legal strategy on environmental remediation and HSE litigation matters. We will consider applicants in either Phoenix or Arlington, VA.
The Assistant General Counsel – HSE is a senior legal advisor on environmental remediation and operational health and safety matters at a company whose operations span active manufacturing, research and development, and a considerable number of current and former operating sites carrying historic environmental liabilities and ongoing workplace safety obligations inherent to aerospace production. This role is responsible for driving legal strategy on the company’s most complex remediation matters and for serving as a legal advisor on OSHA compliance and enforcement, both areas of outsized importance to the company’s credibility with regulators, investors, and the communities in which it operates.
Drive the legal strategy for the company’s portfolio of environmental remediation sites, including properties subject to CERCLA/Superfund obligations, state voluntary cleanup programs, RCRA corrective action requirements, and other federal and state remediation frameworks. Negotiate consent decrees, administrative orders on consent, and other settlement instruments with federal and state regulatory agencies. Manage the defense and resolution of contribution and cost-recovery claims and advise on allocation disputes involving multiple potentially responsible parties. Evaluate legal strategies for legacy liabilities inherited through historical corporate transactions, including indemnification claims, insurance recovery actions, and successor liability issues.
Litigation Management.Oversee environmental litigation, including CERCLA contribution claims and natural resource damages actions. Select, direct, and manage outside counsel and experts handling HSE-related disputes, with a focus on cost-effective resolution strategies. Coordinate with the company’s broader litigation function to ensure consistent legal positions and efficient resource allocation across the environmental docket.
Environmental and Real Estate.Negotiate access agreements for environmental investigation and remediation activities on current and former operating sites. Review easements and right-of-way use permits related to remediation infrastructure, monitoring wells, and other environmental access needs. Coordinate with the company's Global Real Estate group to advise on environmental aspects of property acquisitions, dispositions, and lease transactions.
Occupational Health and Safety.Serve as a legal advisor on matters arising under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, OSHA regulations, and analogous state-plan programs. Provide legal counsel on compliance with OSHA’s general industry standards relevant to aerospace manufacturing and maintenance operations. Oversee the legal response to OSHA inspections, citations, and penalty proceedings, including contest proceedings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. Collaborate with the HSE operations team on incident investigations and corrective action plans to mitigate legal exposure following workplace injuries or fatalities.
