Job summary

MARTA is seeking an experienced attorney to provide general legal representation of the Authority and its employees in mediation, arbitration, and litigation across motor vehicle, train-related, and civil rights matters. The role involves negotiation, settlement, and cost recovery work, with advice to the Authority as required.

Qualified candidates have a law degree and Georgia Bar membership, plus at least four years of legal experience and at least two years in litigation.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree from an accredited law school, LL.B., or J.D. Degree and a minimum of four (4) years of legal experience required.
• Membership of Georgia Bar Association. Minimum of 2 years litigation experience required.

Responsibilities

• Represents the authority in mediation, arbitration, hearings, trials and general litigation, to include but not limited to workers' compensation claims and/or employment matters in state and federal courts.
• Prepares pleadings and other legal documents necessary to defend Authority from inception to conclusion of legal actions.
• Represents the Authority before federal and state agencies and in public hearings.
• Assists adjusters with assessing claims to determine validity and proper action.
• Conducts investigations, as assigned.
• Researches and drafts, as required, legal opinions, briefs or memoranda.
• Provides general advice to and representation of the Authority, as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including Transit Ambassador assignments.

Job description

Responsible for providing general legal representation of the Authority and its employees in mediation, arbitration, and litigation in defense of claims (e.g. motor vehicle and train-related claims, slip and fall, trip and fall, and police-related claims including false arrest, excessive force, workers compensation, employment law litigation and other civil rights matters); assisting in the negotiation and settlement of claims prior to litigation; pursuing cost recovery of claims by the Authority against third parties; and rendering legal advice as required.
