Job description

Overview

The ideal candidate is skilled, highly motivated, and should have at least six (6) years of defensive litigation experience in general civil, tort, and/or employment litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate work. A preference for a candidate who has first and/or second chair trial experience and experience working as part of a team and independently. The applicant should also have a passion for advocacy and a strong understanding of legal procedures, court rules, and ethical considerations, and be capable of handling administrative personnel hearings and matters during all stages of litigation including discovery, depositions, and mediation or alternative dispute resolution.

Litigation Attorney Responsibilities & Duties
  • Represent the City and its officials in court proceedings and negotiations
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support cases
  • Draft and review legal documents, including pleadings and motions
  • Communicate with clients and opposing counsel
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in the law and legal procedures
  • Manage a large case load and meet deadlines
  • Participate in the development and implementation of legal strategies
  • Other duties as assigned

Applicants must possess strong written and oral communication skills, analytical skills, sound judgment, professionalism and interpersonal skills necessary to contribute to a litigation team and handle complex legal matters in a fast‑paced environment. Strong negotiation and mediation skills. Experience in handling complex civil criminal cases. Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Proficiency in legal research. Strong ethical standards and professional integrity. Ability to work independently as well as part of a legal team.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Juris Doctorate degree required. Must be a member of good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. Must have at least at least six (6) years of post‑graduate legal experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in municipal, county, state, general civil and/or constitutional law.

Important: This position also encompasses other duties as assigned, which will be determined by program demands, evolving business needs, organizational priorities, operational needs, and Departmental requirements.

Work Schedule

This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in‑person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in‑person work.
