Job summary

AEVEX, headquartered in Solana Beach, CA, seeks a Sr. Aeromechanical Engineer to lead design and development of autonomous systems from napkin sketch to 1.0 prototype. You will guide a small agile team and coordinate with multidisciplinary groups to deliver fielded UAS solutions.

You will perform FEA/CFD analyses, validate designs with prototype testing, and communicate progress through formal and informal presentations while traveling as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 8+ years of progressive technical experience in an engineering organization.
  • Experience designing mil-y electronics products.
  • Understanding of metallic, plastic, and composite material properties.
  • Ability to solve structural dynamics problems.
  • Proficiency with industry standards (GD&T, ASME, Change Control).
  • Experience with machined, composite, injection molded parts, sheet metal, wire assemblies, and mechanical assemblies for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with mechanical, lab, field, flight, and environmental testing.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to guide an engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of UAS products and subsystems.
  • Build and test prototype systems to validate designs.
  • Make design decisions and coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering groups.
  • Oversee production-ready airframe designs from concept to 1.0 prototype.
  • Deliver formal and informal design presentations to stakeholders.
  • Perform FEA and CFD simulations on aircraft and powerplants.
  • Interface with customers as ideas are communicated.
  • Travel as required.

Job Overview
Sr. Aeromechanical Engineers work to solve the nation's hardest problems through rapidly deployed technology solutions. Are you an aerospace or mechanical engineer stuck in a narrow job? Do you want to rapidly build autonomous systems aligned with your hobbies and interests? This job is a lead aeromechanical engineer that takes napkin sketches of airplanes and robots to final production. We work with small teams to move fast and make fielded systems. Here you will lead a small agile team to make these systems a reality from napkin sketch to 1.0 prototype.

Essential Functions

  • Senior role within the engineering team that helps lead in the design and development of UAS products and subsystems.
  • Opportunity to build and tests prototype systems to validate designs
  • Have decision-making abilities for design challenges and coordination with multidisciplinary engineering groups
  • Performance of all vehicle designs from initial concept to complete production-ready design
  • Conduct presentations (Formal and Informal) on designs.
  • Uses scientific and engineering principles to assess deficiencies in any given design and the impact of potential changes
  • Makes complex decisions to meet stated and derived requirements
  • Complete assigned tasks within the project schedule and budget
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to others in both their discipline and company values
  • Conduct FEA and CFD simulation analysis on aircraft and powerplants
  • Design airframes and other aeromechanical parts
  • Act as an interface to customers as ideas are communicated
  • Travel as required

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Demonstrated competence in Mechanical Engineering processes and design/analysis tools, solving Mechanics & Kinematics problems, solving Thermodynamics problems
  • Experienced in successfully designing mil-y electronics products
  • Demonstrated understanding of metallic, plastic, and composite material properties
  • Demonstrated ability to solve basic structural dynamics problems
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of industry design and documentation standards (GD&T, ASME, Change Control, etc.)
  • Experienced with designing: machined parts, composite parts, injection molded parts, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies, and mechanical assemblies for low, medium, and high-volume manufacturing processes
  • Experienced with: mechanical, lab, field, flight, and environmental testing
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering configuration management processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high-level program requirements, organize, schedule, and delegate tasks to an engineering team
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Periods of development may require long irregular hours around deadlines, weekends, and some holidays and in-field test environments

Education / Certifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Experience
Minimum of 8+ years of experience in a progressive technical capacity within an engineering organization
