As a senior commercial data scientist, you will serve as a high-autonomy technical subject matter expert supporting advanced analytics and machine learning within Phillips 66’s Commercial organization. The role focuses on independently driving validated data products and translating complex analysis into decision-quality signals for trading and business stakeholders.
Role Overview
In this position, you will independently manage desk relationships and deliver trading-ready and business-ready analytics outputs. You will work closely with traders and analysts to convert multi-source data into insights that support forecasting, trading decisions, and commercial strategy. You will also establish reusable analytical methods and modeling patterns that can be scaled across commodities, markets, and Commercial teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with traders, strategists, market analysts, and Commercial leaders to define high-value problem statements, identify opportunities, and integrate validated analytical insights into business and trading decisions.
- Lead end-to-end data science initiatives spanning forecasting, scenario analysis, optimization, anomaly detection, signal generation, and other advanced analytics use cases.
- Evaluate and improve internal, external, and alternative data sources to strengthen quality, coverage, timeliness, and commercial relevance, and to establish trusted business-ready data products.
- Convert desk-specific solutions into reusable methods, modeling patterns, and tools that can scale across commodities, markets, and Commercial teams.
- Write production-quality code and collaborate with data engineering, ML engineering, and software development teams to support deployment, monitoring, CI/CD, MLflow, and durable MLOps workflows.
- Provide technical direction and reusable foundations for the team, participate in tooling and architecture decisions, and mentor data scientists and other technical team members without formal management authority.
- Communicate complex technical concepts, model results, uncertainty, and recommendations to technical peers, commercial stakeholders, and senior leadership; develop or integrate analytical solutions into dashboards and existing platforms to improve decision speed.
Required Qualifications
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Master’s degree or higher in a related quantitative field, including Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, Physics, or a similar discipline.
- 6 or more years of industry experience developing and deploying advanced analytics and machine learning solutions, including independent ownership of ambiguous problems from hypothesis through business adoption.
- Strong Python data science skills with production-quality coding experience.
- Solid mathematical and statistical foundations, including inference, time-series modeling, econometrics, optimization, and rigorous model evaluation.
- Proven ability to extract insights from large, complex, multi-source datasets and translate findings into actionable commercial recommendations.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical peers, commercial partners, and senior leaders.

- PhD in a related quantitative field such as Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, or Physics.
- Experience in energy, commodities, trading, financial markets, or another decision-intensive commercial environment, including understanding of price formation, market structure, and risk.
- Depth in time-series analysis, forecasting, optimization, geospatial data, anomaly detection, or applied machine learning applied to live business decisions.
- Experience shaping shared research, modeling, or data-product infrastructure rather than delivering only one-off analyses.
- Experience collaborating across front office, risk, compliance, IT, Digital, and other cross-functional teams to deliver durable business outcomes.
Compensation and Benefits
Base salary range: USD 180,900 - 221,100 per year.
Bonus eligibility: This role is eligible to participate in the company’s commercial bonus program, with additional compensation based on business and individual performance in accordance with program guidelines.
