Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Solar PV Design Engineer to lead the technical design of medium to large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems across the municipal, K-12 education, and commercial & industrial (C&I) sectors. The engineer will be responsible for producing high-quality design documentation and system layouts that define the Basis of Design (BoD) for procurement and construction. This role will not serve as the Engineer of Record but will be critical to the technical definition and successful delivery of each project.

The ideal candidate will also have experience in the strategic integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE), and other technologies enabling the design of future microgrid systems for enhanced resilience and grid independence.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Design & Engineering
  • Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for solar projects.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry standards.
  • Stay updated on the latest solar technologies, software, and regulatory changes.
  • Support the sales team by providing technical expertise during client presentations.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Design PV systems including optimal layout configurations, system sizing, and BOS equipment selection.
  • Utilize software such as Helioscope, PVsyst, and AutoCAD for design and analysis.
  • Create electrical single-line diagrams (SLDs), site layouts, wire/conduit runs, and specification sheets.
  • Perform glare/shading analyses and define points of utility interconnection.
  • Coordinate with structural, civil, and electrical engineers to ensure cohesive design.
  • Microgrid & DER Integration
    • Develop strategies to integrate PV with DER assets such as BESS, RICE, etc.
    • Contribute to control logic, load prioritization, and resiliency planning for microgrid design.
    • Support system modeling to evaluate energy balancing, economic dispatch, and backup power capabilities.
  • Bid & Documentation Development
    • Define the Basis of Design to inform vendor and contractor bid packages.
    • Prepare technical bid documentation and review supplier and subcontractor submittals for compliance.
  • Field & Vendor Coordination
    • Participate in on-site job walks to validate design assumptions and support construction planning.
    • Communicate design intent, constraints, and changes with vendors, field personnel, and project stakeholders.
  • Cost Estimation
    • Produce detailed engineered cost estimates for PV and DER systems including labor, materials, and interconnection.
    • Support financial modeling with accurate system performance and capital cost inputs.
  • Commissioning Support
    • Develop a preliminary commissioning plan during the design phase.
    • Support commissioning activities during construction and project close-out, ensuring systems perform to specifications.
  • Utility Interconnection
    • Manage utility interconnection applications and coordinate required studies.
