Job summary

Markel in Richmond, VA is seeking a Senior Actuarial Manager to lead the actuarial strategy and analysis for the Workers’ Compensation segment. You will partner with senior leadership, Underwriting, Claims, and Finance to drive profitable growth and informed business decisions.

You will oversee pricing, profitability monitoring, and portfolio analytics, providing actionable insights for underwriting strategy, capital allocation, and long-term objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • ACAS required; FCAS preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of actuarial experience with a focus on Workers' Compensation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead actuarial analyses and guidance for the Workers’ Compensation segment.
  • Develop and maintain pricing analyses, rate indications, and profitability assessments.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and executives to inform strategy.
  • Monitor portfolio results, loss trends, and underwriting performance.
  • Support business planning, forecasting, and reinsurance evaluations.
  • Communicate complex analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentor and develop actuarial staff and lead cross-functional initiatives.

The primary purpose of this role is to lead the actuarial strategy and analysis for the Workers Compensation segment, partnering closely with senior leadership, Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and other key stakeholders to drive profitable growth and informed business decision-making.

This position is responsible for overseeing pricing, profitability monitoring, and portfolio analytics, while providing actionable insights that support underwriting strategy, capital allocation, and long-term business objectives. The role requires deep actuarial expertise, strong business acumen, and the ability to effectively communicate complex analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.

As a leader within the Actuarial organization, this individual will foster collaboration across functions, influence strategic initiatives, and support the development of actuarial talent.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead actuarial analyses and provide strategic guidance for the Workers Compensation segment, ensuring alignment with profitability, growth, and portfolio management objectives.
  • Develop and maintain pricing analyses, rate indications, portfolio monitoring tools, and profitability assessments to support underwriting and business strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and Executive Management to identify risks and opportunities, evaluate business performance, and support strategic decision‑making.
  • Monitor portfolio results, loss trends, claim development patterns, and underwriting performance to provide actionable recommendations that improve business outcomes.
  • Partner with Claims leadership to evaluate claim trends, severity drivers, and operational initiatives that impact Workers Compensation performance.
  • Provide actuarial support for business planning, forecasting, reinsurance evaluations, and other strategic initiatives affecting the Workers Compensation portfolio.
  • Clearly communicate actuarial analyses, insights, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior management and executive leadership.
  • Present findings and recommendations in meetings and strategic discussions, translating complex actuarial concepts into practical business considerations.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business partners by providing education and guidance on actuarial methodologies, assumptions, and key performance drivers.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-functional projects and initiatives, representing the Actuarial function in enterprise and segment-level efforts.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop actuarial staff, promoting technical excellence, professional growth, and alignment with organizational objectives.
Education

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.

Certification

ACAS required; FCAS preferred

Work Experience / Skillset
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of actuarial experience, with a strong emphasis in Workers Compensation.
  • Demonstrated experience in Workers Compensation pricing, reserving, or portfolio management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience partnering with Underwriting, Claims, and Finance leaders to influence business strategy and operational outcomes.

Pay information

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Sr. Actuarial Manager is $141,640 to $194,755 with 30% incentive.
